PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team tallied just two hits in a 7-0 loss at No. 8 Stanford on Friday night (March 2), which marked the beginning of a four-game series at Sunken Diamond.
The defeat is Michigan's first shutout loss of the season and the fifth-straight loss over its spring break trip.
The Friday-night meeting was scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. PT start, but rain and forecasted weather in the area delayed the game by 30 minutes. Despite the delay, heavy rain fell for the majority of the first five innings once the contest was underway.
Neither team scored in the first inning, but Stanford struck in the bottom of the second inning to plate two runs on three hits for a 2-0 lead.
With Michigan unable to gain any momentum offensively, the Cardinal added three runs in the bottom of the fifth before a two-run homer in the seventh put Stanford up, 7-0.
The Wolverines totaled just two hits in the contest, including a leadoff single by junior Ako Thomas to start the game and a base hit by freshman Jack Blomgren in the top of the third.
Michigan's only other baserunner was redshirt freshman Marcus Chavez, who drew the team's lone walk in the fifth.
Senior righty Alec Rennard took the loss as he surrendered five runs on six hits through five innings. He walked a career-high four in the outing, but struck out a season-high six.
Junior right-handed pitcher Troy Miller tied his career high with three innings of relief and allowed two runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
Michigan and Stanford will continue the four-game series on Saturday (March 3) with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. PT at Sunken Diamond.
