ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Following one of the best years in University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team program history, head coach Mike Bottom was named Big Ten Coach of the Year on Tuesday (March 20).
This is Bottom's sixth career Big Ten Coach of the Year honor, as he has earned the past five awards in men's swimming and diving. This year, he led the Wolverine women to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships -- their third-best in history and highest in 20 years -- and to a third consecutive Big Ten championship. They went 10-0 in dual meets this season, their first undefeated dual-meet season since 1997-98.
Since the programs combined in 2012-13, Bottom and his coaching staff have built the Wolverines into a national powerhouse, going from 36th in 2013 to 4th in 2018. Michigan sent 14 student-athletes to the NCAA Championships this season, 10 of whom scored points in at least one individual event. The Wolverines are also slated to have at least 15 Academic All-Big Ten honorees for the third consecutive season.
