COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team lost a hard-fought battle against the No. 2-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday (March. 25). Junior Myles Schalet was the only Wolverine who was able to come away with a victory in the 6-1 loss.
U-M dropped the doubles point in two matches that were close the entire way. The duo of senior Alex Knight and freshman Mattias Siimar fell, 6-4, and sophomore Connor Johnston and Schalet dropped their match, 7-5. The match at the No. 3 spot was unfinished, but the Maize and Blue tandem of seniors Runhao Hua and Carter Lin took the No. 55-ranked OSU pair to a tiebreaker.
The Buckeyes picked up the pace in singles play and opened up with a win at No. 5, as Siimar lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. In the marquee singles match of the contest, No. 5-ranked Knight went head-to-head with the No. 4-ranked player in the country, Ohio State's Mikael Torpegaard, who got the better of Knight in this matchup, 6-2, 6-0. OSU secured the victory shortly after No. 3, as Lin saw his 10-match win streak come to an end with a 6-2, 6-2 loss.
As the remaining matches played out, each of the final three contests needed a third-set tiebreaker. Another ranked matchup saw Hua fall at No. 2. Hua won the first set but lost the second and could not get the victory in the tiebreaker, losing 6-4, 2-6, 7-10. The next match went the Wolverines' way, as Schalet pulled the upset of Kyle Seelig, the No. 42-ranked player in the country, winning 6-7, 6-4, 10-3. Senior Davis Crocker in the six spot was the last to finish, and his match was the closest from beginning to end. It came down to the wire, but Crocker fell 7-6, 4-6, 8-10.
Michigan will look to rebound next Saturday (March 31) when it hosts the Indiana Hoosiers at the Varsity Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for noon.
