COLUMBUS, Ohio -- During a busy day of racing on the Scioto River, the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan rowing program collected seven wins while competing against No. 9 Virginia and Clemson on Saturday (March 31). Michigan's first varsity eight boat won both its races, as did the first and second varsity four boats.
Late in the week, weather concerns caused today's race schedule to be moved up, with the first races of the day beginning at 7:30 a.m. This led to colder temperatures (in the mid-30s) on the water this morning, with winds gusting around 12 miles per hour, but temperatures rose to the low 40s by the end of the second-morning session. More importantly, the teams avoided the 20-plus mile per hour winds that came in the early afternoon.
With its two victories today, the first varsity eight improves to 5-1 on the season, with top-10 wins over No. 8 Brown and No. 9 Virginia (twice). The 1V8 came in at 6:14.5, ahead of Clemson (6:31.44) in the early session, and followed that performance with a time of 6:27.9 in the second session, good for a win of +2.24 on UVA.
Michigan's varsity boats won seven of nine races in all (not including novice races), coming in second place once and third place once. In the 2V8 race, the Cavaliers (6:36.4) avenged their early-season loss to Michigan (6:40.48) with a win in today's late morning session.
Not to be outdone by the success of the varsity eight boats, U-M's varsity fours also accomplished plenty during today's races. In the first session, the 1V4 and 2V4 earned wins of +18.62 seconds and +16.83 seconds on Clemson and Michigan State, respectively. The finishes were much closer in the second session, but the result was the same: U-M swept Virginia with the 1V4 winning by +8.57 seconds and the 2V4 by +7.33 seconds.
The novice program was in competition for the second weekend in a row at Ohio State, after an informal set of races last weekend. Though the novice boats only raced in the first session, the athletes saw good competition with the likes of OSU, Virginia and Michigan State, helping them continue to prepare for the Big Ten Championships in May.
Overall, head coach Mark Rothstein saw improvement from within the program, especially in the fours and novice boats. He characterized the weekend as "good, not great", but noted that seeing the Wolverines pick up so many race wins was a good sign. It's one that bodes well for the Maize and Blue as the program rolls into the month of April.
Michigan welcomes Big Ten competition next weekend in its first home event of the year. The Wolverines will host Indiana and Iowa on Belleville Lake (April 7), where U-M will return later in the month for Senior Day against Louisville (April 29). Next weekend's races are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and fans can learn more about the Wolverines' home venue the Michigan Boathouse at Belleville Lake.
