BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan rowing program collected 13 of a possible 14 wins while competing against ranked Big Ten opponents, No. 16 Indiana and No. 11 Iowa, on Saturday (April 7), with No. 18 Michigan State rounding out the Big Ten double-dual format. The Wolverines raced seven boats and the day was highlighted by a bounce-back weekend from the 2V8 boat, a strong showing of improvement from the novice and four boats, and a near clean-sweep of the weekend.
Weather loomed as an unknown factor this morning, but the full day of action was competed as scheduled after a chilly morning gave way to sunny skies and clear waters. The temperatures hovered in the high 20s in the morning, drifting into the low-to-mid 30s by the afternoon races. Races were pushed back by an hour earlier in the week to allow for warmer temperatures at race time.
In the morning session, U-M won all seven of its races against the Hoosiers to begin the day with an undefeated stretch. Both novice boats earned wins of more than 20 seconds, and the 2V4 boat executed a strong race to beat Indiana handily, crossing at 7:24.60 (+24.88).
The second varsity eight enjoyed a comfortable win as well, opening up strong to put distance on Indiana early in the race. The Wolverines came across the finish line at 6:28.03 (+16.51).
The 1V8 boat closed out the early session by squeaking out a tighter finish for the win in 6:26.99 (+1.82).
Opponents flipped for the afternoon session, when the Wolverines and Hawkeyes went head-to-head. The four boats continued a strong weekend, and even showed out with the 4V4 boat serving as Michigan's second entry in the 3V4 race. Both U-M's 3V4 (7:21.8) and 4V4 (7:27.67) boats came in ahead of Iowa's entry (7:38.83) in the first race of the season for the 4V4.
The 1V4 (7:18.2; +13.03) and 2V4 (7:18.1; +25.3) earned huge victories, but the final two races of the day were much more closely contested. In the 2V8 race, U-M edged out the Hawkeyes by three-tenths of a second, crossing the finish line at 6:28.0 to Iowa's 6:28.3.
The first varsity eight closed out the day with the only loss of the weekend, as Iowa went up about six seats in the first 750 meters. U-M tried to close the gap over the second half of the race, but could not. The Hawkeyes picked up the win with a time of 6:17.8, with the Wolverines crossing the finish line at 6:30.18.
Head coach Mark Rothstein was pleased with the upward direction of much of the team's boats, especially the fours. He also knows that there is more in the tank, and that his top boat in particular will need a much better performance to compete for a top spot at next month's Big Ten Championships.
"Today was good, up until the last race," said Rothstein, "I didn't think we raced really well and Iowa is really, really good. That combination led to their victory by a substantial mark."
But with the final stretch of the academic year on deck, and Camp Wolverine right around the corner, Rothstein stressed the importance of staying the course and seeking day-to-day and week-to-week improvements.
"We are looking to get better each and every week, and I don't think we did that this week," he said. "In some events we did, and in some we didn't. We need to do it in every event, and we'll get back to work on Monday."
Michigan travels on its final regular-season road trip next Saturday (April 14), competing against No. 3 Texas and No. 1 Washington in Las Vegas, Nevada.
