MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team earned the doubles point and three wins in singles play to claim a 4-3 win over Wisconsin on Friday afternoon (April 13) in a closely contested Big Ten Conference matchup at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Michigan earned the doubles point after wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Senior Alex Knight and freshman Harrison Brown grabbed the first win of the day by a score of 6-4. After a loss at No. 1, it came down to the tandem of Runhao Hua and Mattias Siimar to secure the doubles point. The duo was able to win a hard-fought tiebreaker and put the Wolverines up 1-0.
The Badgers got off to a hot start in singles play and took a 2-1 lead with straight-sets wins at Nos. 2 and 4. But the Wolverines struck back with two straight-sets singles victories of their own at No. 5 (Carter Lin) and No. 6. (Davis Crocker). Knight and Myles Schalet both went into third sets, with only one of them needing a victory to secure the match. Daniel Soyfer took Knight to a tiebreaker, but the 11th-ranked singles player in the nation pulled it out and gave U-M the 4-3 victory.
Michigan will conclude their road trip at No. 36 Minnesota on Sunday (April 15). First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. CDT.
