LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The University of Michigan rowing program had a fast day of racing on Lake Las Vegas on Saturday (April 14), earning a second-place finish in the second varsity eight event while competing with two of the top programs in the country.
In facing No. 1-ranked Washington and No. 3-ranked Texas, this weekend presented a good opportunity for Michigan to get a glimpse of the kind of racing they'll see next month at the NCAA Championships (May 25-27).
The day began with the varsity four race, which Washington won in 6:50.59, putting open water between themselves and Texas (+1.86), while the Wolverines placed third (+9.68).
In the second varsity eight race, the Wolverines took second place in a tightly contested event. Washington (6:11.40) came away with the victory, with U-M finishing behind the Huskies in 6:15.77 and Texas in third at 6:17.39.
In the first varsity eight race, it was once again Washington in the winner's circle. U-M rowed hard, and was about four seats down to Texas down the final 500 meters. The Huskies' time of 6:02.60 earned them victory, ahead of the Longhorns (+5.50) and Wolverines (+7.51).
Michigan ends the regular season by welcoming Louisville to Belleville Lake in two weeks (April 29) in the program's final matchup before the Big Ten Championships next month (May 13). The team will also celebrate Senior Day against the Cardinals.
