ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien tossed her third no-hitter of the season to headline the No. 14-ranked University of Michigan softball team's 8-0, six-inning decision against Maryland on Sunday (April 22) in front of a season-high crowd of 2,261 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field. The Wolverines have won each of their last 14 games.
Beaubien (27-2) was just a fifth-inning walk shy of a perfect game, instead settling for an 11-strikeout no-hitter -- her third complete-game no-hitter of the season and the Wolverines program-record sixth. It was also Beaubien's fourth game this year with double-digit strikeouts.
The top of the order contributed much of the Wolverines' offense, as junior second baseman Faith Canfield, junior center fielder Natalie Peters and senior first baseman Tera Blanco combined for seven hits and four RBI. Canfield set the tone with a home run in Michigan's first plate appearance -- off just the second pitch -- and U-M scored runs in each of the first four innings.
Michigan's first three runs all came on long balls. Canfield's homer -- her seventh of the season -- cleared the wall in left center field, while freshman designated player Lou Allan knocked out a line-drive no-doubter into the Terrapin bullpen beyond left field in the second inning for her third homer this year.
Like yesterday, the Wolverines capitalized on Maryland miscues with two outs in the third. After entering on a two-out walk, senior pinch runner Nikki Wald advanced two bases when the Terps misplayed a grounder to second, then came home on an overthrow to third in Maryland's attempt to get her out -- nearly taking out head coach Carol Hutchins in the process.
Michigan scored again plated two with two outs in the fourth on back-to-back RBI hits from Peters and Blanco. Peters aired out a double down the right-field line and to the warning track and came home when Blanco connected with an 0-2 pitch in next at-bat and drove it through the right side. Blanco ended the game in her next turn at the plate in the sixth; after she bounced a single to the 5-6 gap with the bases loaded and no outs.
Michigan (38-7, 13-1 Big Ten) will hit the road next weekend, traveling to Bloomington, Indiana, for a three-game weekend series against Indiana. The series will kick off with a 6 p.m. slate on Friday (April 27) at Andy Mohr Field.
