ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With postseason competition beginning in two weeks, the University of Michigan women's track and field team is set for its toughest regular-season challenge as it heads to Arkansas for the inaugural National Relay Championships on Friday and Saturday (April 27-28).
With the Big Ten Championships just two weekends away -- May 11-13 in Bloomington, Indiana -- this week's contest in Arkansas represents the Wolverines' final opportunities to sharpen up against national-caliber competition ahead of the conference meet.
Michigan's top athletes will take on an elite field at the inaugural National Relay Championships at Arkansas, which brings together many of the premier programs from across the "Power Five" conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC).
In addition to the host Razorbacks, Michigan will also square off with athletes and relay teams from Baylor, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Miami (Fla.), Oklahoma State, Stanford, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.
Field event action begins Friday at 10 a.m. CDT with a session containing all the individual events on the track getting underway for the women at 3 p.m. CDT.
Saturday's schedule also begins in the field at 1:20 p.m. CDT, with field events throughout the day leading up to a relay-event-only evening session that begins for Michigan at 7:02 p.m. CDT.
The meet will be a scored competition, but not in the traditional sense. Instead of scoring every event -- individual and relay -- a "relay champion" will be determined by scoring the results of the seven relay events.
Relays will be scored through eight places, with the winning team earning 10 points toward its overall team score. The runner-up will earn eight points, third gets six, fourth earns five, fifth gets four, sixth earns three, sevenths gets two and eighth earns one (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1).
In addition to the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays that are considered official NCAA events, the meet will also feature the distance medley relay -- which is an official NCAA indoor event -- along with 4x200-meter, 4x800-meter, 4x1,500-meter and sprint medley relays.
The distance medley relay, totaling 4,000 meters, consists of legs measuring 1,200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters and 1,600 meters; the sprint medley relay, totaling 1,600 meters, consists of two 200-meter legs, a 400-meter leg and an 800-meter leg.
Live results for the meet will be available from Flash Results as the meet approaches, and fans can follow the latest updates directly from the program's official social media channels.

THE WOLVERINES' TOP COMPETITORS
• Michigan will be fielding squads in five of the seven relay events comprising the National Relay Championships team competition. Listed below in order of events are the pools for each relay:
» 4x100: Echols, Johnson, Morgan, Harrison
» 4x800: Mallory. Barrett, Hill, Jahnson, Hannah Meier
» 4x200: Echols, Johnson, Morgan, Thomas
» Distance Medley: Haley Meier, Harrison, Borchers, Morrissey
» 4x400: Johnson, Foster, Morgan, Hall
• A pair of relay teams have shots at school records this weekend in the 4x100 and distance medley relays. While the 4x100 team will be without Meghan Marias as she walks at graduation, the crew -- ranked No. 2 in school history -- will continue to chase the school record of 45.01 from 1998. As it stands, the team is just two-tenths of a second shy of the all-time mark. The distance medley relay has a tougher standard to reach -- the school record of 10:49.58 is also the No. 2 time in outdoor collegiate history. But with the No. 3-ranked 1,500m runner in school history in Jamie Morrissey, a Big Ten champion in Haley Meier, the No. 2-ranked steeplechaser in Claire Borchers and a school record-holder in Jade Harrison, that mark might be in reach.
• Morrissey will be looking to carry the momentum from her historic 4:11.48 run over 1,500 meters -- a performance that earned her Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week honors -- to the 800-meter distance. Already this season she has come within .02 of her 2:05.09 lifetime best from last summer in just two races at the distance.
• The night before Morrissey's big run at Stanford last weekend, Haley Meier laid down a historic performance of her own in her 5,000-meter debut. Running 16:07.20, Meier just missed the all-time Michigan top-10 list in the event. This weekend, Meier will be looking to follow Morrissey's lead at 1,500 meters and put down a time that will secure her a berth to the NCAA East Prelims and position herself alongside Morrissey as favorites at the Big Ten Championships. She has run 4:22.13 this year, but went as fast as 4:15.65 last season. She will be joined at that distance by twin sister Hannah Meier, Claire Borchers and Sarah Zieve -- all of whom have run career bests this season either in the indoor mile or outdoor 1,500.
MICHIGAN IN THE NCAA EAST RANKINGS
Listed below are all the Wolverine men who are currently ranked among the top-48 individuals in their respective events. Why top-48? That is the cutoff for qualifying to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Tampa, Florida., next month. The NCAA East Prelims serve as the gateway to qualifying for June's NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Athletes currently ranked top-25 in their events at this point in the season are near-locks to advance to the NCAA East Prelims. Those ranked from that cutoff through No. 40 are on the fence of advancing at this point as marks will continue improving around the nation as the spring progresses, but they would be best served to improve their mark to secure a spot. From there through No. 48, an improved mark will be required to hold on to their top-48 positioning.
