FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Headlined by a distance medley relay victory, the University of Michigan women's track and field team wrapped up its weekend of competition at Arkansas' National Relay Championships on Saturday (April 28) at John McDonnell Field.
The quartet of Haley Meier, Jade Harrison, Claire Borchers and Jamie Morrissey clocked 11:07.49 to score a runaway 12-second win over host Arkansas, and propel the Wolverines to a ninth-place finish in the 14-team field.
Only the seven relay events on the program counted in the scoring. Ten of the Wolverines' points came from the victory, using the 10-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system through eight places.
The victory -- a measure of redemption from an indoor season that saw Michigan win the Big Ten title but miss the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2002 -- came with standout efforts from all four legs of the race.
Meier, who was among the lead pack on the final lap of her 1,200-meter leg, pulled away from the pack in the final 200 meters with a move from which the rest of the field would never recover. She handed off to Harrison for the 400-meter leg, giving her a more than a two-second cushion.
That lead would only grow as Harrison clocked a blistering 51.91 split -- about two seconds faster than both the 53.90 she ran in the open 400 yesterday (Friday, April 27) and the next-best split of 53.89 -- to give Borchers a five-and-a-half second advantage going into her 800-meter leg.
Borchers, running all alone, clocked a 2:07.94 split that was more than two seconds superior to her outdoor 800-meter career best and more than a second better than the next-best runner.
Morrissey received the baton with a 12-second lead and still soloed a 4:43.46 split over 1,600 meters that was nearly two-and-a-half seconds faster than anyone else in the field.
Michigan got three more points from its sixth-place 4x800 relay team. The squad of Hannah Meier, Mallory Barrett, Carola Jansohn and Alice Hill clocked 8:44.50.
The 4x100 relay team was 12th, and the 4x400 team took 14th.
Select Wolverines will get in one final tune-up this coming Thursday and/or Friday (May 3-4) at the Toledo Invitational ahead of the Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Indiana, on May 11-13.
