ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Led by the 2018 debut of reigning NCAA 1,500-meter national champion Jaimie Phelan, the University of Michigan women's track and field team will get in one final tune-up competition ahead of its postseason run at the Toledo Invitational on Thursday and Friday (May 3-4).
Phelan is one of 22 Wolverine women looking to sharpen their fitness and competition-readiness with the Big Ten Championships looming just over a week away on May 11-13 in Bloomington, Indiana.
While the throwing events will be contested Thursday afternoon starting at 1 p.m., the largest majority of Michigan's entrants -- 20 of those 22 Wolverines -- will compete Friday with action both on the track and in the field beginning for U-M at noon.
Live results for the meet will be available from CFPI Timing as the meet approaches, and fans can always follow the latest updates directly from the program's official social media channels.
Phelan, who has not yet taken part in collegiate competition since winning last year's national title due to injury and the subsequent recovery, is making her return just in time to muster a defense of her Big Ten and national titles at 1,500 meters. Her road to the postseason begins Friday with either the 1,500 at 12:20 p.m. or the 800 meters later in the afternoon at approximately 2 p.m.
While the meet will certainly serve as a reintroduction to competition after nearly a year away, Phelan potentially could put herself in position to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds (the top-48-ranked per event qualify) in either the 800 or the 1,500 by running in the neighborhood of 2:08 or 4:24, respectively.
While Phelan begins her pursuit of the postseason on Friday, the 4x100 relay team will be continuing its chase of the 20-year-old school record. At 12:05 p.m., the quartet of Torisa Johnson, Meghan Marias, Lauren Morgan and Jade Harrison will look to improve on its season's best 45.21 -- the No. 2 time in school history -- and surpass the record 45.01 posted by the 1998 squad at the Big Ten Championships.
Harrison is also among those Wolverines competing individually at 100 meters, and could have an opportunity to approach the school record of 11.39 set by Olympian Cindy Ofili in 2015. Harrison clocked a career-best 11.64 to begin the season in mid-March.
A school-record or near-school-record performance in the 4x100 relay would likely put the squad in contention to advance to the NCAA East Prelims, while a slight improvement for Harrison into the 11.5's or 11.4's potentially could grant her entry to the NCAA postseason at 100 meters.
MICHIGAN IN THE NCAA EAST RANKINGS
Listed below are all the Wolverine men who are currently ranked among the top-48 individuals in their respective events. Why top 48? That is the cutoff for qualifying to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Tampa, Florida, next month. The NCAA East Prelims serve as the gateway to qualifying for June's NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Athletes currently ranked top-25 in their events at this point in the season are near-locks to advance to the NCAA East Prelims. Those ranked from that cutoff through No. 40 are on the fence of advancing at this point as marks will continue improving around the nation as the spring progresses, but they would be best served to improve their mark to secure a spot. From there through No. 48, an improved mark will be required to hold on to their top-48 positioning.
