ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Following a three-game sweep of Delaware last weekend to run its winning streak to 12 straight games, the University of Michigan baseball team (16-11, 3-0 B1G) will wrap up a seven-game homestand this week with a midweek non-conference game against Toledo on Wednesday (April 4) before jumping back into Big Ten action this weekend (April 6-8) with a series at Northwestern.
• Wednesday's game wraps up a seven-game homestand for the Wolverines, who are set to play 24 games at the Wilpon Complex this season. Following a series at Northwestern this weekend, Michigan will kick off a six-game homestand when it hosts Maryland and Penn State in back-to-back Big Ten series.
• Michigan is 11-1 at home after dropping its home opener on March 14 and responding with 11 straight wins at Ray Fisher Stadium. Through 12 games played at the Wilpon Complex, the Wolverines have posted a .318 batting average with 95 runs scored in addition to a 2.50 earned run average.
• The Wolverines have now won 12 in a row, including 11 straight at home, which marks the longest win streak under head coach Erik Bakich. The next-longest win streak by a Wolverine team came in 2008, when Michigan won 16 consecutive games.
• Michigan's 12-game win streak includes three series sweeps and three wins in midweek non-conference games. Since a loss in their home opener on March 14, the Wolverines have hit for a combined .311 batting average and outscored their opponents, 95-39. Michigan has also compiled a .435 slugging percentage and .409 on-base percentage during that period, with 24 doubles and seven homers. From the mound, the Wolverine pitching staff has posted a 2.33 earned run average with 94 strikeouts.
• Freshman Jesse Franklin earned his first conference honor as he was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday (April 1). Franklin helped the Wolverines to a 4-0 week that included a midweek win over Central Michigan and a series sweep of Delaware, which marked the Wolverines' third straight sweep. The freshman from Seattle, Washington, ended the week with a .500 batting average and a .938 slugging percentage that included a double and two home runs. In addition to a team-leading eight hits and seven RBI, he knocked in the game-winning runs on both Wednesday (March 28) and Sunday (April 1).
• Michigan's pitching staff surrendered just five runs through four games last week to combine for a 1.25 ERA. Over that span, Michigan pitchers struck out a combined 30 batters and gave up just five extra-base hits. The Wolverines also combined for their third shutout of the season with an 11-0 win over Delaware on Saturday (March 31).
• Junior Ako Thomas, Michigan's leadoff man, has reached base in all 27 of this season's games after last year putting together a run of 38 consecutive games in which he reached base safely. Thomas leads the Wolverines in runs (23), walks (21) and doubles (nine). He also recorded the two-out, bases-loaded, game-winning hit in a 7-6 walk-off victory over Western Michigan.
• To date, freshman Jordan Nwogu leads Michigan hitters with a .333 batting average and a .472 slugging percentage through 19 games played. Junior Jonathan Engelmann leads everyday starters with a .324 batting average and a .463 slugging percentage.
• Toledo enters the week with a 7-17 overall record and a 3-3 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The Rockets are 0-2 against Big Ten opponents after dropping a game to Iowa in their season opener and falling to Ohio State by a 19-4 score last week. Junior Ross Adolph leads Toledo at the plate with a .333 batting average and a .708 slugging percentage. Fifth-year senior Sam Shutes leads the Rockets pitching staff with a 5-0 record through seven starts, which includes a team-leading 40 strikeouts and just eight walks.
• The Wolverines and Rockets first met in 1896, and Michigan owns a 39-13-1 record over Toledo since that time. Last year Michigan defeated Toledo by a 12-0 score in the second game of a nine-game win streak for the Maize and Blue.
• After losing 15 players at the end of the 2017 season, including a program-record 11 in the Major League Baseball Draft, the Maize and Blue added 14 players to its roster in the off-season. The roster additions included 12 freshmen and two junior college transfers that hail from seven different states. The Wolverine recruiting class was ranked No. 10 by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, marking the highest ranking ever for a Big Ten recruiting class.
