ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team earned a runner-up finish in the Big Ten Championships on Friday night (April 6) at Crisler Center, scoring a 408.600 to finish behind Illinois (413.900).
Freshman Cameron Bock took fourth in the all-around competition with a score of 82.800, becoming the first freshman since Sam Mikulak (2011) to earn All-Big Ten honors in the all-around.
The Wolverines (13-5, 6-3 Big Ten) qualified 12 routines from eight gymnasts, led by freshman Jacob Moore (floor exercise), junior Emyre Cole (floor exercise, vault), senior Marty Strech (floor exercise), sophomore Mack Lasker (pommel horse), junior Ryan Dunning (still rings), senior Dmitri Belanovski (still rings), junior Anthony McCallum (vault, parallel bars) and Bock (still rings, pommel horse, high bar).
U-M started off the meet in second place after the first rotation, but had a second rotation bye, which put them a score behind. U-M had a strong 70.050 on floor to start out the evening, which is the third-best score on the apparatus for the season.
The Maize and Blue continued to have strong performances, highlighted by the second-highest score on vault this season (72.650) with huge routines from McCallum (14.850) and Cole (14.650). This also marked McCallum's first routine on the apparatus since the season opener.
The 2018 freshman class had a strong day of competition with Nick Guy tying a career-high 14.400 on vault, Moore finishing first on floor (14.700) in addition to Bock's success in the all-around.
The last time U-M earned a runner-up finish was during the 2012 season, when the Wolverines placed behind Illinois.
