URBANA, Ill. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis claimed the doubles point but was unable to hold in singles play, dropping a 4-2 Big Ten match at the hands of Illinois on Saturday afternoon (April 7). Senior Runhao Hua claimed the lone singles win for the Maize and Blue.
The Maize and Blue claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Teaming up for the first time, senior Alex Knight and freshman Harrison Brown made quick work in the three spot with a 6-3 win. Hua lined up next to freshman Mattias Siimar at No. 2, as the pair earned their third consecutive win together with a 7-5 victory to claim the first point of the match.
The momentum shifted in singles play as the Illini won four out of six first sets. After the hosts earned their first point at No. 5, Michigan reclaimed the lead momentarily with Hua's win at No. 2. However, Illinois would go on to claim three consecutive victories to earn a 4-2 win.
Michigan will look to rebound tomorrow (April 8) when it travels to Northwestern to wrap up its Illinois weekend swing. First serve is set to begin at noon.
