BOSTON, Mass. -- Facing a difficult challenge of five games in less than 30 hours, the ninth-ranked University of Michigan water polo team got off to a good start with three wins Saturday (April 7).
The Wolverines started the busy weekend on the campus of Harvard University with three contests against unranked opponents and scored wins over Brown (16-5), Bucknell (14-5) and George Washington (20-9).
U-M strung together three great games, outscoring its opponents 50-10 to stretch its winning streak to 19 games. The offensive onslaught included three five-goal performances and a single-game record for points as senior Caroline Anderson had four goals and seven assists against George Washington.
The Wolverines held two opponents to five goals or fewer and have now limited 14 opponents to five or fewer this season.
Game 1: No. 9 Michigan 16, Brown 5
Junior Julia Sellers put on a show for Michigan in the first game of the weekend. She tallied four goals and an assist in the first quarter alone, helping U-M score on its first four possessions of the game. She scored from the inside, outside, on the counter, from each side of the cage, and Brown did not have an answer as U-M build a big lead early on. Sellers finished with five goals to match her career high.
Michigan had six goals in the first quarter and five in the second to reach double digits in the first half. U-M held an 11-3 lead at halftime with five different players scoring goals. The Wolverines cooled off slightly in the second half but still managed three goals in the third and two in the fourth.
Sophomore Maddy Steere netted her ninth game with three or more goals and had an assist and two drawn exclusions. Anderson had a big game with two goals and four assists to tie Sellers with a game-high six points.
It was the second time Michigan had faced Brown this year, and both games have ended with a 16-5 Wolverine victory.
Game 2: No. 9 Michigan 14, Bucknell 5
The Wolverines did not start quite as hot in the afternoon contest as they did in the morning. Junior Kim Johnson scored the game's first goal to give her 50 scores on the year, but Bucknell came back to take a 2-1 lead.
Michigan tied the score with another Johnson goal before the end of the first quarter, kickstarting a three-goal run. After Bucknell made it 4-3, U-M put together another three-goal streak to build a 7-3 lead at halftime. Johnson was a big contributor in the first half with four of her game-high five goals, which also matched her career high.
The Bison struck first in the second half, but Michigan again went on a run with four straight in the third quarter to gain a commanding 11-4 advantage. Three more goals in the fourth period made the final score 14-5.
Along with Johnson's five-goal game, Michigan got great performances from Anderson (three goals, three assists) and senior Laura Jimenez (one goal, four assists).
Game 3: No. 9 Michigan 20, George Washington 9
Anderson had a miraculous game for the Wolverines with a Michigan single-game record 11 points to break Shana Welch's previous mark of 10 against Hawai'i in 2007. Anderson had four goals and seven assists, matching the school single-game record for assists set by Meg Knudtsen vs. Penn State-Behrend in 2003.
U-M scored from start to finish in this one to notch a season-high 20 goals.
Four different Wolverines recorded hat tricks. Sellers led the way with her second five-goal game of the day to go with one assist. Freshman Kathy Rogers scored four times, and Steere added a three-goal outing to go with three assists.
Michigan poured in seven goals during the first quarter with two in the final 45 seconds. U-M scored at least four goals in all four quarters as it hit the 50-goal mark for the day.
After a much-needed night of rest, the Wolverines will return to Blodgett Pool for two games against ranked teams tomorrow (Sunday, April 8). U-M will face No. 22 Harvard in its home pool at 11:45 a.m., and less than three hours after that game ends, the Wolverines will close out the weekend against No. 15 Princeton at 3:30 p.m.
