WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan baseball team dropped the opening game of its final regular-season series by a 3-0 score at Purdue on Thursday evening (May 17) at Alexander Field.

The shutout loss is just the Wolverines' second of the year and first in Big Ten Conference play. Michigan and Purdue now sit in a tie for second place in the Big Ten.

Purdue took a lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the first, and added one in the second inning to go ahead, 2-0.

Michigan starter Tommy Henry settled in from there and allowed just four hits over the next 4.1 innings before leaving the game in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on base. The runner would eventually score, putting the Boilermakers up by three.

The Wolverines put runners on in all but the fifth inning, but left six on base as Michigan failed to convert any runs.

Freshmen Jack Blomgren and Jesse Franklin led the Wolverine hitters with two hits apiece, as Michigan totaled seven as a team.

Henry (7-3) surrendered three runs -- just one earned -- through 6.1 innings and took the loss. He and freshman reliever Jeff Criswell combined to strike out 10 Boilermakers.

Michigan (32-17, 15-6 B1G) and Purdue (32-18, 15-6 B1G) will continue their three-game set on Friday (May 18) at Alexander Field. First pitch is set for 7 p.m., and fans can watch the game live on the Big Ten Network.
