ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis seniors Runhao Hua and Alex Knight will take part in the 2018 NCAA Individual Championships this week (May 23-28) at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Hua, who is currently ranked No. 47, will take on No. 28-ranked Johannes Ingildsen of Florida in the first round (Wednesday, May 23) at 8 a.m., while No. 17-ranked Knight, who heads into the 64-man tournament as one of the 16-seeded players, will face No. 26-ranked Cameron Klinger of Vanderbilt at 9 a.m. Hua and Knight will team up on Thursday (May 24) in doubles action when they take on Fabian Fallert and Time Sandkaulen of Mississippi.
• Hua was defeated by Inglidsen, 6-2, 6-3 earlier this season (Feb. 9) when the Gators traveled to Ann Arbor. Knight has never faced Klinger during his collegiate career, while the same goes in doubles play as Hua and Knight have yet to face off against Fallert and Sandkaulen.
Â
• This is the second year in a row the Wolverines will send a doubles team to the tournament, as Connor Johnston and Jathan Malik qualified last year. This is the first time that two singles players will represent the Maize and Blue since 2007, when Brian Hung and Matko Maravic qualified. The last U-M player to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships was Evan King, who made three consecutive tournament appearances (2011-13), making it to the quarterfinals in his senior season.
• Hua heads into the week sporting a 23-7 record in singles play, while going 23-10 in doubles action. He is riding a three-match win streak after defeating No. 81-ranked Evan Zhu of UCLA last Friday (May 18) in the NCAA Round of 16. Hua became the 27th member of the "20/20 club" in Michigan men's tennis history for winning at least 20 singles and doubles matches in a season.
• Knight is enjoying a breakout senior season, during which he primarily played at the one spot, going 25-7 in singles while having similar success in doubles with a 25-10 record. A unanimous All-Big Ten first-team honoree, Knight was ranked nationally all season, reaching as high as No. 3 (Feb. 7). Knight became the second player in program history to achieve 25 victories in singles and doubles in one season, while being a part of the "20/20 club" for the second consecutive year.
• Knight and Hua earned All-Big Ten First Team honors, with Knight being a unanimous selection.
• The NCAA Singles Championship is a 64-person draw with each match consisting of best-of-three tiebreak sets. The doubles tournament is a 32-team format with each match consisting of best-of-three tiebreak sets.Â
