Hua Earns First-Round Win at NCAA Singles Championship

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- University of Michigan men's tennis seniors Runhao Hua and Alex Knight competed in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship Wednesday morning (May 23) at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. Hua cruised past Florida's No. 28-ranked Johannes Ingildsen, 7-5, 6-2 for his fourth consecutive singles victory.
Knight saw his singles career come to a close after falling to No. 26 Cameron Klinger of Vanderbilt, 6-4, 6-0.
With Hua's win, he will face No. 5-seeded Patrick Kypson of Texas A&M, who defeated Columbia's Jackie Tang, 6-4, 6-2. The Round of 32 matchup is scheduled for Thursday (May 24), with first serve coming at 8 am.
Hua exacted revenge from an earlier season loss at the hands of Ingildsen (6-2, 6-3) when Florida traveled to Ann Arbor (Feb. 9), to take the match in straight sets. After taking the first set 7-5, Hua took full control in the second set to earn a 6-2 win and advance to the Round of 32.
Hua improves to 24-7 in singles action, while extending his win streak to four matches.
Knight concludes his senior season with a 25-8 singles record, while being named a unanimous All-Big Ten first team selection. In his career, the Miami Shores, Florida, native accumulated a 79-45 record. Knight was also named the ITA Most Improved Senior during the NCAA Tournament Players' Celebration (May 23).
Hua and Knight will team up tomorrow (May 24) in the Round of 32 of the Doubles Championship when they take on Mississippi's Fabien Fallert and Tim Sandkaulen.
