OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Michigan baseball team was knocked out of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday (May 25) with a 5-3 loss to Ohio State in an elimination game at TD Ameritrade Park.
The Wolverines will now await a possible at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will air live on ESPNU on Monday (May 28) at noon.
Both teams put runners on base in every at-bat, but Ohio State scored first with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead.
A scoreless fourth inning followed, and the Wolverines rallied for their first run in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a leadoff double from redshirt freshman Harrison Salter and a sacrifice fly from junior Jonathan Engelmann.
Ohio State extended its lead to four with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Michigan answered with two runs in the top of the seventh to cut the Buckeye lead to two, 5-3. Sophomore Dominic Clementi sparked the rally with a base hit to short-right field, and freshman Jesse Franklin followed with a two-out double to the right-field wall. With both men in scoring position, senior Brock Keener dropped a base hit into short-center field that allowed Clementi and Franklin to score.
The Wolverines threatened with a runner in scoring position in the top of the ninth, but did not score.
Michigan totaled 10 hits --Â which included five doubles -- and walked twice, but struck out 10 times and left 10 men on base. The Wolverines went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
