PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The University of Michigan baseball team (28-14, 13-3 Big Ten) rallied for a 9-4 victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday (May 5) to even the weekend series at Bainton Field.
Seven of Michigan's nine runs came with two outs, and four Wolverines recorded multiple hits in the effort. Freshman Jesse Franklin led the offense with three hits and a career-high five RBI, while junior Jimmy Kerr totaled a career-high three hits and junior Jonathan Engelmann tied his career high with three stolen bases.
The Scarlet Knights took a two-run lead in the bottom of the second inning on two hits and a walk, but Michigan answered with a three-run third to take the lead. Back-to-back two-out singles from sophomore Dominic Clementi and Engelmann got the rally started, and Franklin sent his first career triple to deep left-center field to tie the score at 2. A ground-rule double off the bat junior Blake Nelson followed to score Franklin and put Michigan up by one.
Rutgers answered in the bottom of the frame with two hits to tie the score at 3, but both teams quieted in the fourth. In the top of the fifth, Michigan regained a lead with a solo home run from redshirt junior Miles Lewis, and Engelmann used his speed to swipe two bags before racing home on an fielder's choice to put Michigan up, 5-3.
The Wolverines broke open the game with four runs in the fifth to take a six-run lead, and though the Scarlet Knights added one run in the bottom of the seventh, Michigan held Rutgers scoreless through the eighth and ninth for a 9-4 win.
Michigan had baserunners in all but one inning, and put the leadoff man on base four times, including a bunt single by freshman Jordan Nwogu to lead off the game. Nwogu would later leave the game due to injury on a stolen base attempt.
Freshman Ben Dragani (6-0) earned the win for Michigan with 6.2 innings of work and a career-high seven strikeouts.
Following Dragani's departure, senior righty Alec Rennard closed out the game for the Wolverines with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. He did not allow a hit.
