
Michigan Ice Hockey: 2018 Summer Update

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With the 2018-19 University of Michigan ice hockey season on the horizon, we take a look back at all that happened this summer.
Hughes and Larkin Take Part in IIHF World Championships
U-M rising sophomore defenseman Quinn Hughes and the U.S. Men's National Team earned a bronze medal at the 2018 IIHF Men's World Championship after defeating Canada, 4-1, on May 20. Also joining Hughes on the medal-winning team was Wolverine alumnus Dylan Larkin (2015).
Team Elects Captain, Four Alternates
Michigan elected its captain, rising senior defenseman Joseph Cecconi, and four alternate captains for the 2018-19 season. Rising senior Nicholas Boka will serve as alternate captain alongside rising juniors Luke Martin, Will Lockwood and Jake Slaker.
Hughes Drafted into NHL, Announces Return to Michigan
Quinn Hughes was selected seventh overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft on June 22. On July 28 -- after debating jumping to the NHL -- Hughes announced he would be returning to the Wolverines for another season.
Invites to NHL Development Camps
The Maize and Blue had 17 players invited to NHL development camps.
The NHL development camps, which do not affect student-athletes' NCAA eligibility, are designed to give players the experience of an NHL training camp. Team draft picks, prospects and free-agent invitees participate in on-ice practice and scrimmage sessions, medical and fitness testing, meetings and seminars, as well as off-ice team-building activities.

Hughes and Norris Star in World Junior Summer Showcase
Michigan rising sophomores Quinn Hughes and Josh Norris took part in the 2018 World Junior Summer Showcase (July 28-Aug. 4). The Stars and Stripes earned five victories, which included an overtime win over Sweden.

Alumni Weekend
Michigan ice hockey alumni, joined by family, gathered once again for the annual Michigan Hockey Alumni Weekend, highlighted by a golf tournament, held at the U-M Golf Course on Saturday, Aug. 4.
Berenson Selected to USA Hockey HOF
The United States Hockey Hall of Fame announced its 2018 class on Thursday, Aug. 9, and legendary former Michigan head coach Red Berenson was among the five members who will be inducted.
The induction celebration will take place at the JW Marriott in Nashville, Tennessee, on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. EST. Tickets for the event will go on sale on Monday, Aug. 13, at 10 a.m. EDT at USHockeyHallofFame.com.
Michigan Hockey Announces Staff Updates
U-M announced Tuesday, Aug. 14, that longtime athletic trainer Rick Bancroft has transitioned to director of hockey operations and Brian Brewster will join the Wolverines as head athletic trainer for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
Pro Blue Camp
Michigan Hockey's Pro Blue Camp kicked off Aug. 21, as former members gathered in Ann Arbor to refine their skills at Yost Ice Arena before heading off to their professional clubs. Among the players that participated were Dylan Larkin, Kyle Connor, Kevin Porter, Andrew Copp, and JT Compher, to name a few.
Alums in Stars & Stripes Showdown
Michigan ice hockey alum and current Detroit Red Wing Dylan Larkin took a primary role in organizing the Stars and Stripes Showdown, which is a charity game held on Aug. 26. The event features some of the best current American-born NHL players with the purpose of honoring the late Jim Johannson and raising money for the Jim Johannson Legacy Fund of the USA Hockey Foundation and the Ellie Johannson College Fund.
Wolverine alums Dylan Larkin, Zach Werenski, Kyle Connor, Andrew Copp, JT Compher, Luke Glendening and Matt Hunwick will take part in the game along with fellow notable NHL players that include: Charlie McAvoy, Patrick Kane, Auston Matthews, Seth Jones, Johnny Gaudreau and James van Riemsdyk.
