ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After a dramatic team win Monday (Sept. 17) over Texas A&M, the University of Michigan women's golf team suffered a 4.5-0.5 setback to Oregon on Tuesday (Sept. 18) and finished sixth at the East & West Match Play Challenge held at U-M's Radrick Farms Golf Course. Junior Hannah Ghelfi earned runner-up honors in the individual bracket.
"I loved what I saw with our team and the way they came together this week," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "Already they care so much about each other and played hard for each other. That's the great thing about this tournament, it can create that early bond.
"We came off a really nice high yesterday from our dramatic comeback win over Texas A&M and today we just got outplayed. With that said, I saw some great shots from our team out there today and really all weekend long. Those combined with many other great stuff gives us a lot of positives to take away from this season-opening event."
In one of U-M's best matches of the day, Ghelfi had her individual bracket championship match come down to the wire, but she fell to Ohio State's Adeena Shears, 1 up. Starting off the front side, the match remained even through the first six holes before Shears struck first on the par 3 seventh holes as Ghelfi bogeyed.
Ghelfi squared the match four holes later and took her first lead at No. 12, as Shears' two bogeys cost her. After exchanging hole wins on Nos. 13 and 14, Shears' back-to-back wins on Nos. 15 (par) and 16 (birdie) gave her a one-shot lead heading into the final two holes.
As Shear made a birdie on the par-4 17th, Ghelfi matched with a bending birdie to extend the match to the 18th. Needing to win the hole to extend the championship match, Ghelfi's approach on 18 left her a long putt, which she sailed right. With Shears' fringe putt stopping within a foot-and-a-half, Ghefli conceded giving Shear a 1 up victory.
"Today was probably one of the most fun, but yet, most intense matches I have ever played in," said Ghelfi. "We both played really well. It just really came down to putting, and she just made more down the stretch."
Our hearts are with Celia Barquin Arozamena, her family & @CycloneWGOLF today as the entire field honored them ALL today in the final round of the East & West Match Play. ?? pic.twitter.com/dDRacGILbl

The final round was played with heavy hearts after Iowa State's sudden departure following the tragic death of former Cyclone Celia Barquin Arozamena. The final round was dedicated in Celia's honor as the field wore special ribbons throughout the last day.
"We have a really tight-knit community of college golfers," said Dowling. "A lot of players know her (Iowa State's Celia Barquin Arozamena) or knew of her at this tournament. It's crazy that we are even in this situation. Our hearts go out to her family, Iowa State and the entire community. It's an absolute tragedy. We just hope to send some strength their way."
The Wolverines will take a week to prepare before heading back out for its first true stroke-play event when they head to Chicago, Illinois, for Northwestern's Windy City Classic, Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 1-2). The two-day, 54-hole event will be held at the Westmoreland Country Club.
