ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team (11-5, 2-2 Big Ten) hits the road for the first of two straight away games, heading to Maryland to take on the No. 9-ranked Terrapins (14-1, 3-1 Big Ten) on Saturday (Jan. 12) at XFinity Center. The game is set for 4:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
• Michigan will play at Maryland for the first time since Jan. 19, 2017. It will mark the return of junior Kayla Robbins to her home state of Maryland. Robbins grew up in Mitchellville, and went to high school at St. John's College High School. In addition, director of operations Amy Mulligan is a 2003 graduate of Maryland.
• Michigan will square off against its sixth top-25 opponent of the season when it takes on No. 9 Maryland. The Terps are the second top-10 team Michigan has faced this season, as U-M fell to then-No. 10 Texas at the Gulf Coast Showcase. Michigan is 2-3 against top-25 teams, earning wins over No. 12 Minnesota and No. 21 Missouri.
• Michigan has been involved in some late-game drama over its past two games, with both contests decided by just one point. Michigan fell, 71-70, at Purdue on Jan. 5, before bouncing back for a 79-78 overtime win against Northwestern on Tuesday (Jan. 8). It was Michigan's first one-point win since a 77-76 victory over Temple on March 28, 2016. The last time U-M won a one-point game in Big Ten action was a 70-69 win over Michigan State on Feb. 16, 2013. It also was the first time in school history that the Maize and Blue has played in back-to-back one-point games.
• Maryland welcomes Michigan after picking up an 81-63 win at Nebraska on Tuesday (Jan. 8). The Terrapins have a trio of double-figure scorers in Kaila Charles (16.9 ppg), Taylor Mikesell (14.8 ppg) and Stephanie Jones (13.3 ppg). Mikesell and Michigan freshman Naz Hillmon played AAU together for Sports City U in Ohio during high school. Maryland is averaging 77.3 points per contest on 46.7 percent shooting while allowing 55.9 points per game on 34.0 percent shooting. Michigan won last year's matchup between the two teams, with Maryland leading the all-time series, 5-1.
• Michigan and Maryland are the top two teams in the Big Ten in rebound margin. Maryland leads the conference with a plus-13.5 advantage on the boards, while Michigan is second with a plus-11.6 margin. The Terps and Wolverines are the only two teams in the conference with a double-digit margin on the glass. Maryland is second in the Big Ten in rebounds (46.1), while Michigan comes in fourth with 42.7 boards per game.
