COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team was down just one point entering the fourth quarter, but No. 9-ranked Maryland opened the frame on a 13-6 run to take control of the contest en route to an 83-69 win over the Wolverines on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 12) at Xfinity Center.
Senior Hallie Thome tallied her second straight double-double, going for 25 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Amy Dilk joined her in double figures, scoring 12 points. Sophomore Deja Church went for eight points, with classmate Hailey Brown scoring seven points. Michigan outrebounded Maryland, 43-41, and forced 15 turnovers while only committing 10.
Michigan scored the first basket of the game before Maryland answered with eight straight for an 8-2 lead in the early going. The Maize and Blue ended the first quarter on an 8-0 run for a 21-14 lead after 10 minutes, getting four points each from junior Kayla Robbins and Thome over the last 2:10 of the first period.
In the second quarter, Maryland hit three straight triples, with a Church layup in between, to force a Michigan timeout with 5:47 left in the quarter and the score tied at 25.
The Terps hit the break with a one-point lead, 35-34, after outscoring Michigan, 21-13, in the second quarter.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair as Michigan regained a 42-41 lead on a Thome three-point play with 7:13 left in the third quarter. U-M extended its lead to five points, 48-43, on a free throw from freshman Naz Hillmon with 4:55 to go in the period.
The Maize and Blue grabbed a six-point lead, 52-46, on a layup from Dilk with 3:08 to go in the third before the Terrapins scored the final seven points of the period for a 53-52 lead after 30 minutes.
Michigan closed within two, 60-58, on a Church jumper in the lane with 7:47 remaining, but Maryland answered with a triple in the corner for a five-point lead. Maryland hit back-to-back triples on its next two possessions, forcing a U-M timeout with 6:50 left and the Terps holding a 66-58 lead.
Munger hit a hanging jumper in the lane to cut Maryland's lead to eight with 3:30 remaining, but that was as close as Michigan got the rest of the way.
Michigan will complete a two-game road swing on Thursday (Jan. 17), when it travels to Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes at 8 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
