IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team closed within 10 points with 5:15 remaining but could get no closer as a 22-9 advantage in the third quarter propped No. 22-ranked Iowa to a 75-61 win on Thursday (Jan. 17) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Freshman Naz Hillmon led the way for the Wolverines (11-7, 2-4 B1G), going for 16 points on 8-for-12 shooting and six rebounds. Senior Hallie Thome joined her in double figures, scoring 15 points with six boards, with sophomore Hailey Brown turning in seven points, four boards and two blocks. Michigan shot 41.8 percent (28-for-67) from the floor, with Iowa (13-4, 4-2 B1G) turning in a 57.6 percent (34-for-59) performance. Michigan committed just seven turnovers, the fewest since committing nine against Fort Wayne on Dec. 16, 2017.
After falling in a 10-7 hole in the early going, U-M ripped off a 7-0 run for a 14-10 lead on a three-point play from freshman Amy Dilk, along with buckets from junior Kayla Robbins and sophomore Deja Church with 4:15 remaining in the first quarter.
The teams went back-and-forth the rest of the first quarter, heading to the second quarter deadlocked at 16.
Iowa hit the break with a 32-29 lead after 20 minutes that featured 12 ties and four lead changes. Michigan led by as many as six points in the first half, with Iowa leading by as many as five.
U-M scored the first basket of the third quarter on a layup from Brown, but the Hawkeyes hit back-to-back triples in transition as part of a 10-0 run, taking a 42-31 lead at the 7:14 mark of the third quarter to force a Michigan timeout.
Thome scored on Michigan's next possession to stop the run and pull Michigan back within single digits, 42-33, at the 6:48 mark.
Iowa scored 12 of the next 17 points in the quarter, outscoring Michigan, 22-9, in the frame for a 54-38 lead after 30 minutes.
The Maize and Blue opened the fourth quarter with the first five points, getting a triple from Brown and a lefty layup from Thome to cut the Hawkeye lead to 11, 54-43, just 1:10 into the period.
U-M closed to within 10 points on a layup from Hillmon with 4:41 to go, but Iowa answered with a quick 6-0 spurt to push the lead back to 16. The Maize and Blue called timeout with 3:10 left after another Hillmon bucket, with Iowa leading by 14 (71-57).
Each team scored four points the rest of the way to provide the final margin.
U-M will return to Crisler Center on Sunday (Jan. 20), when they will host Ohio State at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
