ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9 University of Michigan women's gymnastics team opened up its home and conference schedule with a win over Michigan State, 195.975 - 194.050. The Wolverines were excited to be back in Crisler Center in front of a crowd of nearly 4,000 fans and a packed student section.
Freshman Natalie Wojcik continued her exciting debut season with an amazing overall performance, putting up the top all-around score at 39.325. Her beam performance that scored a 9.950 was especially impressive. She also got the top score on the uneven bars, with a 9.900. She has combined to win seven individual events and has collected three all-around titles in her first three collegiate meets.
Other notable performances came from the senior captains, Emma McLean and Olivia Karas. McLean's top-performing vault that earned a 9.900 and Karas' outstanding floor routine that got a 9.875 helped to put the Wolverines on top.
The freshmen on the team had a great showing in their Crisler debut. In addition to Wojcik's success, Abby Brenner and Maddie Mariani each put up a 9.800 on vault, helping Michigan to earn another meet-high run of vaults (49.150).
The meet was Michigan's sensory friendly meet with Adaptive Gymnastics invited to perform before the meet and pass out flowers to the individual event winners. Facts about developmental disabilities were displayed throughout the meet to help raise awareness among fans.
The Wolverines will head back on the road next weekend as they travel to College Park, Maryland, to square off against the University of Maryland on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m.
