
Wolverines to Compete at Maryland on Saturday Night

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team will head back on the road this weekend as they have a Big Ten dual meet in Xfinity Center against the University of Maryland on Saturday (Jan. 26) in College Park.
Maryland Meet
• Maryland enters the meet with an 0-1 record in Big Ten competition, losing to Illinois last Saturday (Jan. 19). The Terps are 1-1 overall and ranked No. 32 in the Road to Nationals rankings. Their strongest event is uneven bars, in which they are ranked No. 14.
• Michigan and Maryland will meet for the 17th time, with the Wolverines holding a 15-1 record in the all-time series against Maryland. Michigan has won the last 15 meetings after falling to the Terps in the first matcup between the schools in 1983. All 15 wins have come during head coach Bev Plocki's tenure.
• The teams last met in College Park, Maryland, in 2017, when U-M recorded a 196.475-195.625 victory.
• Emma McLean had a big meet at Xfinity Center in the 2017 meet with a 9.900 to win vault and a 9.925 for second place on floor exercise. Lexi Funk had a 9.925 on balance beam as U-M notched a 49.450 on the event.Â
Last Time Out
• Michigan won its home and conference opener last Friday (Jan. 18) with a score of 195.975 to topple Michigan State at Crisler Center.
• The Wolverines had individual winners on all four events.
• Freshman Natalie Wojcik won on uneven bars (9.900), balance beam (9.950) and captured the all-around title (39.325).
• Senior Olivia Karas earned her first win of the year with a 9.875 to finish off the floor exercise rotation and took second place in the all-around with a 39.250.
• McLean won vault with a 9.900.
Big Ten Race
• Last weekend marked the start of conference play around the Big Ten.
• Michigan, Nebraska, Illinois, Ohio State and Minnesota all started out the season with a 1-0 record against league competition.
• Illinois will be at Nebraska in the only matchup of 1-0 teams this weekend. Ohio State will be at Michigan State and Minnesota will travel to Penn State.
Three in a Row
• Wojcik was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the third consecutive week after winning two more individual events and the all-around for the third straight meet.
• She has now won seven individual events and all three all-around titles in her first three collegiate meets, including two wins on vault, two on bars and three on beam.
• In the rankings, Wojcik is No. 3 on vault, No. 6 on balance beam, tied for 21st on uneven bars and No. 10 in the all-around.
Vault Strength
• Michigan ranks No. 3 in the nation on vault and has put together strong vault rotations in all three of its meets.
• The Wolverines had a 49.200 in Cancun (Jan. 4), a 49.350 at Alabama (Jan. 11) and a 49.150 at home against Michigan State (Jan. 18).
• U-M has had an individual win vault in all three of its meets, with Wojcik winning twice and McLean once.
Next Home Meet
• Michigan returns to Crisler Center on Sunday, Feb. 3, to take on Nebraska at 2 p.m. The meet will be televised on ESPN.
