Wolverines Suffer First Loss of Season at Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team (No. 2 AP, No. 4 ESPN Coaches) took its first setback of the 2018-19 season, falling to Wisconsin, 64-54, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19) at the Kohl Center.
Junior Jon Teske led all Michigan scorers with 15 points and added seven rebounds to go along with four blocks. Junior Zavier Simpson notched his second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while adding six assists to notch his 14th game with five or more helpers. Finally, sophomore Jordan Poole had a double-digit scoring effort, netting 14 for the Maize and Blue.
Michigan forced Wisconsin into 11 turnovers, scoring 11 points off miscues, while 24 of its points on the afternoon came in the paint. As a team, Michigan had 11 assists with Simpson dishing out six and Poole adding three.
Both teams struggled to get their offense going early as the Wolverines took an 11-9 lead with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half following four straight Austin Davis points.
Wisconsin came out of a timeout and put together a quick 7-0 run, but the Wolverines responded to take a 19-16 advantage to force a Badger timeout.
The timeout was not in vain as Wisconsin came out of the break and tallied their second 7-0 run to take a four-point lead over the Wolverines. Poole brought his tally to 11 on an and-one play off the drive to cut the Badger lead to one before Simpson hit a three-pointer following a Wisconsin miss to allow U-M to take a slight 27-25 advantage into the locker room.
The two teams exchanged baskets through the first 10 minutes of the second half with neither being able to get more than a four-point edge over the other. Michigan looked to break away as it scored four straight points, including a dunk from Isaiah Livers, but Wisconsin once again answered to knot the score for the fourth time on the afternoon, 43-43.
For the ninth time in the game, the lead switched hands as Wisconsin earned a four-point advantage, 48-44, with 5:52 left in the contest. Each time Michigan closed the gap, Wisconsin had an answer, holding on to a 55-51 lead with 1:29 remaining.
The Wolverines were unable to mount a final comeback as Wisconsin upped its advantage to 10 to earn the 64-54 win at the Kohl Center.
Michigan will return to Crisler Center for a midweek matchup against Minnesota on Tuesday (Jan. 22). Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the game being featured on BTN.
