• Sophomore Cameron Bock earned Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors for winning the all-around at the Windy City Invitational last Saturday (Jan. 19). The recipient of the Gary Morava Cup for his victory, Bock compiled a score of 80.650, highlighted by a second-place finish on parallel bars (14.05), third-place effort on high bar (13.75) and a fourth-place finish on pommel horse (13.80). The all-around title and Gymnast of the Week honor were both the second of his young career.
• The Wolverines began the 2019 season last week at the Windy City Invitational, sitting in second the majority of the meet before nearly catching winner Illinois in the final rotation, while defeating the likes of Minnesota, Iowa, Washington and Illinois-Chicago. Michigan used four event titles to aid the second-place finish with junior Mitchell Brown (parallel bars), senior Justin Hopgood (high bar), sophomore Nick Guy (vault), and Bock (all-around). The event titles were firsts for Brown, Hopgood and Guy, all who look to round into form as lineup mainstays in 2019.
• Freshman Kevin Penev, one of the top recruits in the country heading into the season, made his Michigan debut in the all-around at the Windy City Invitational. He marked a 73.650 in the all-around, with his best effort coming on floor exercise, where he scored a 13.25.
• The Wolverines rank in the top five on floor exercise (third, 69.20), pommel horse (fifth, 64.75) and high bar (second, 66.60). Conversely, Minnesota ranks in the top five on vault (fifth, 70.875), parallel bars (fourth, 67.975), parallel bars (fourth, 67.975) and high bar (fourth, 65.425).
• Michigan holds a 14-4 advantage in the all-time series against Minnesota, but has not met the Gophers in a regular-season dual meet since the 2007 season. New this year is the crowning of a Big Ten regular-season champion, which features each Big Ten team facing off in the same season for the first time in conference history.
• Hopgood enters the meet as the highest-ranked gymnast on any event, as he checks in at No. 2 on high bar (13.95), while Brown ranks third on parallel bars (14.35). Minnesota's Justin Karstadt is the highest-ranked Gopher on an event, as he sits at No. 4 on pommel horse (13.825), and is No. 6 on parallel bars (14.20).
• The top battle of the meet figures to be in the all-around, with Bock ranked No. 4 in the all-around (80.65). Minnesota's Shane Wiskus checks in at No. 11 with a 79.50 and is the reigning CGA Rookie of the Year, as well as Big Ten Gymnast and Freshman of the Year. Wiskus was ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the 2018 class, while Bock checked in at No. 2.
