ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team secured the doubles point and earned three straight-set wins in singles play to earn a 4-1 win over North Carolina State on Saturday morning (Jan. 26) at the Varsity Tennis Center in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off.
The Michigan duo of sophomore Mattias Siimar and freshman Andrew Fenty picked up the first doubles win with a 6-1 victory at No. 2. The No. 3 Wolverine team of freshman Patrick Maloney and senior Myles Schalet quickly followed with a 6-2 win to secure the doubles point. The No. 1 team of junior Connor Johnston and sophomore Harrison Brown held a 4-3 advantage before the clinching point was secured.
The Wolverines continued their dominance in singles, as Michigan earned three victories in straight sets. Schalet took the first point for U-M at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-3 win, while senior Gabe Tishman followed quickly at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph.
The Maize and Blue closed out the morning with a 6-4, 7-5 win from Johnston in the No. 4 spot to lead the Wolverines to victory over the Wolfpack. Fenty led his match 7-6 (4), 5-2, and Maloney entered the third set of his match up 6-3, 3-6, 2-0 when Johnston won his match.
Michigan will conclude the ITA Kick-Off on Sunday (Jan. 27) when it takes on No. 11 Baylor, which defeated No. 12 Georgia, 4-2, on Saturday. Sunday's match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Varsity Tennis Center. N.C. State and Georgia will square off at 10 a.m.
