COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- With a sweep of the individual event and all-around titles, the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team posted a season-high score of 196.400 to improve to 2-0 in the Big Ten with a win at Maryland on Saturday (Jan. 26) in Xfinity Center.
Michigan used its best floor exercise rotation of the season to finish the second half of the meet with momentum. Led by a winning score of 9.925 by senior Olivia Karas, the Wolverines finished the rotation with a 49.200. Freshman Natalie Wojcik hit 9.900 on the event for the first time in her career and freshman Abby Brenner had her best floor of the season with a 9.850.
Those three scores sent the Wolverines to balance increased confidence. Sophomore Lauren Farley started strong with a 9.850, junior Lexi Funk recorded a 9.875 and Wojcik won the event with a 9.925. Freshman Maddie Mariani competed her first career beam routine in college, scoring a 9.750 to cap off a 49.225 rotation score for U-M.
Wojcik continued her impressive run through the 2019 season. She added three more event titles to her resume to give her 10 in four meets. Wojcik also has won the all-around in all four meets. Along with her title on beam, she won the uneven bars with a 9.875 and vault with a stuck landing for a 9.925.
Karas finished second in the all-around with a 39.350. Her floor win was her highlight of the meet, but she also had a 9.825 on both bars and beam to help Michigan come out on top.
Sophomore Anne Maxim made her Michigan debut on uneven bars. The Michigan State transfer has done exhibition routines this season but was in the lineup for the first time Saturday night, scoring a 9.700.
The Wolverines will be at home next Sunday (Feb. 3), when they host Nebraska at 2 p.m. in Crisler Center. The meet will be Michigan's fourth annual Flip for Chip meet, honoring the life of Chip Hills, father of former U-M gymnast Cailee Hills. Purple LED sticks will be given to the first 2,500 fans.
