ANN ARBOR -- Thrower Briana Nelson led the way for the University of Michigan women's track and field team at the Can-Am International at Eastern Michigan on Saturday (Jan. 26) with finals appearances in both the weight throw and shot put.
Only select members of the Michigan sprints and throws groups were in action at EMU on Saturday, as they looked to gain more competition experience heading into the crucial month of February. The upcoming month features both the end of the regular season and the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Feb. 22-23 in Ann Arbor.
Entering as the 15th-highest seeded woman in the weight throw, Nelson tossed a career-best 17.08m (56-0.5) to finish eighth overall.
In the shot put, Erin Connor had a career-best day to lead three Wolverines in the final. Connor threw 13.88m (45 feet, 6.5 inches) to take fourth overall, followed closely by fifth-place Nelson at 13.72m (45-0.25).
Michigan's day on the track -- limited to just the 60-meter hurdles, 60 meters and 400 meters -- was led by Lauren Rodriguez, who was 15th in the 60-meter hurdles.
The full Wolverine women's squad is back in action this coming Friday and Saturday (Feb. 1-2) for the Power Five Invitational in what is the third and final home meet leading up to the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor on Feb. 22-23. Michigan will welcome nationally prominent programs from not only the Big Ten, but also the ACC, Big 12 and SEC.
