ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Some of the nation's best teams from across the most prominent conferences will descend on Ann Arbor this weekend as the University of Michigan women's track and field team hosts the Power Five Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 1-2). It will be the third and final regular-season home meet before Michigan hosts the Big Ten Conference Indoor Championships in February.
Over the course of two days, the Wolverine women will square off against the likes of Big Ten rivals Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota and Wisconsin; ACC foes Georgia Tech, Louisville and Pittsburgh; Kansas from the Big 12; and Vanderbilt from the SEC.
Action at the state-of-the-art U-M Indoor Track Building will get underway Friday at 12:30 p.m. with the five-event pentathlon, followed by an evening track program at 4 p.m. and an unseeded section of the weight throw at 5:30 p.m. Friday's track schedule includes prelims for the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles; finals in the 5,000 meters, distance medley relay and 600 meters; and unseeded sections of various other events.
Competition will resume Saturday morning at 11 when top-seeded sections in all the field events begin, followed by the top-seeded sections of the remaining eight track events starting at noon.
Fans who are unable to make it to the meet can watch the meet from start to finish on the subscription streaming services offered by FloTrack Pro and Big Ten Network Plus. Live results will be available via Delta Timing, and updates will be available on the official Michigan track and field @umichtrack Twitter account.
Nearly the full lineup of top Wolverine contenders are slated to compete on either Friday or Saturday, including the nationally prominent distance crew. Hannah Meier, ranked top-20 nationally both in the mile and at 3,000 meters, will run the 800-meter distance alongside former Big Ten Athlete of the Week Aurora Rynda and Alice Hill.
Rynda set the Michigan freshman record for 600 meters two weekends ago and will look to approach the 2:05.23 freshman record for 800 meters held by Olympian Geena Gall. Another freshman, Lauren Biggs, will make her own bid for Rynda's 600-meter record and compete at 800 meters. Hill will also do double duty at 600 and 800 meters.
Numerous Wolverines will also compete in the mile, headlined by cross country All-American Camille Davre and Big Ten Cross Country Freshman of the Year Anne Forsyth.
Michigan indoor 400-meter school record-holder Jade Harrison will make her 2019 debut in that event to headline the sprints corps. Teammate Chloe Foster will pull double shifts at 400 and 600 meters two weekends after a strong runner-up finish in the latter event behind Rynda.
In the field, teammates Bailey Baker and Kayla Deering enter the weekend as co-school-record-holders in the weight throw at 19.53m (64-1). The pair have combined for three school-record throws in the first two home meets of the year.
Wolverine Bites
• In the weight throw event alone, the first two meets of the year at home have already produced three school records. After Bailey Baker broke the 16-year-old record in the sixth and final round at the season-opening Wolverine Invitational, teammate Kayla Deering came back on the very next throw with a mark of 19.53m (64-1) to break Baker's record. At the Simmons-Harvey Big Ten Invitational, Baker responded by tying Deering's mark to earn a share of the school record. The two are tied for No. 40 nationally.
• True freshman Aurora Rynda became the first Wolverine woman to earn Big Ten Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honors last week following a scintillating performance at the Simmons-Harvey Big Ten Invitational. She clocked a Michigan-freshman-record 1:29.55 for 600 meters to earn the win and the Big Ten-leading mark in 2019, and she came back to run a leg of the Big Ten-leading 4x400 relay.
• Rynda, the No. 2 freshman in the country for 600 meters, is just one of the first-year Wolverines excelling in their first year of NCAA competition. Anne Forsyth is No. 5 among freshmen in the mile, while Camille Davre is No. 11 among freshmen nationally at 3,000 meters. Lauren Biggs is the 11th-fastest freshman in the country so far at 800 meters.
• Though it is still early in the 2019 season and many Wolverines have not yet run in all of their intended events, Michigan is already upholding its reputation as one of the best mid-distance schools in the nation. Hannah Meier is ranked 12th nationally at 3,000 meters among three women currently in the national top 100, and she leads three in the top 100 in the mile as the No. 20 woman in the country.
• While it is not an event contested at the NCAA Championships, the 600 meters is run at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, and Michigan is well-represented at the distance. In addition to the conference-leading Rynda, Chloe Foster is ranked No. 6 in the conference and No. 17 nationally.
