ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior guard Zavier Simpson collected the sixth triple-double in program history and was one of four Wolverines to score in double figures as the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team routed Ohio State, 65-49, on Tuesday night (Jan. 29) at Crisler Center.
Simpson's triple-double (11 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists) is Michigan's first since Derrick Walton Jr. accomplished the feat on Dec. 19, 2015. Five of the program's six triple-doubles have come with head coach John Beilein at the helm.
With his 12 assists, Simpson became the 15th Wolverine to reach the 300-assist plateau (311); he ranks 15th on the school's all-time assists list. His start against the Buckeyes made him the 70th Michigan player to play in 100 games.
It was not only a historic night for Simpson. The Wolverines held Ohio State to fewer than 50 points, which last happened 70 years to the day (Jan. 29, 1949; 50-48). In addition, Beilein tied former U-M coach Johnny Orr's mark for the most Big Ten wins by a Michigan coach (120). Beilein is already U-M's all-time wins leader with 267. The victory also gives Michigan its 30th 20-win season in program history.
Michigan put together a balanced scoring effort against the Buckeyes with four players reaching double digits. Sophomore Jordan Poole led the attack with 15 points, which included three three-pointers, while freshman Ignas Brazdeikis chipped in 14 points, sophomore Isaiah Livers added 12, and Simpson rounded it out with 11 points.
Defensively, Michigan forced Ohio State into 19 turnovers and scored 20 points off Buckeye miscues. The 11 steals by the Wolverines tied a season best and marked the sixth time this season U-M has recorded 10 steals or more in a game. Michigan took care of the ball, committing just nine turnovers to keep its total under 10 for the 11th time this season. It is the third straight game that the Wolverines have kept their turnover total under 10.
Ohio State came out of the gate quickly, as it connected on three of its first four shots and jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. Jon Teske knocked down the first jumper of the game for the Wolverines and Simpson assisted, which gave him 300 for his career. Michigan weathered the storm and kept the game close as it found its offensive rhythm.
A basket from Simpson and a fast-break layup from Poole got the Michigan offense rolling as the Wolverines cut their deficit to 12-8 with 13:25 remaining in the first half.
After missing his first four attempts from beyond the arc, Poole connected on his fifth, after two offensive rebounds by Brandon Johns Jr. and Simpson, which whittled the Ohio State lead to 17-15 with 10 minutes to go in the first half.
Livers came up with a steal and drew a foul to get to the line after the second media timeout. He then connected from three-point territory at the 8:10 mark to tie the game at 19. Less than a minute later, Poole knocked down a deep three-pointer to gave Michigan its first lead of the contest, 22-19.
Threes from Brazdeikis and Charles Matthews late in the half helped Michigan extend its lead to six points, the largest of the contest to that point. At the break the Wolverines led, 32-26. Poole led Michigan with eight points, while Brazdeikis and Matthews had seven each.
Simpson was also a valuable contributor in the first half, scoring four points, dishing out five assists and collecting three rebounds. Defensively, the Maize and Blue forced 11 Buckeye turnovers and had eight steals, leading to an 8-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
After trading fouls for the first two minutes of the second half, Michigan finally got on the board with a Brazdeikis layup. A three from Livers extended the lead to 39-31 with 14:10 to play in the second half.
A drawn charge followed by a deep three-pointer by Poole gave Michigan an 11-point advantage, 44-33, with just over 12 minutes remaining.
Ohio State was unable to cut into the lead as the Buckeyes went 1-for-8 over a three-minute stretch. Simpson hit a three-pointer to put the Maize and Blue ahead, 50-38, with 8:05 remaining in the game.
The Michigan offense began to pour it on, going on a 9-0 run during which Simpson scored five points with two assists. Michigan led, 56-38, with 7:34 left in the second half.
Simpson found Matthews cutting to the basket for a layup, giving Simpson a career-high 11 assists. A few minutes later, a sweeping crossover followed by a hook shot layup gave Simpson his third double-double of the season, and Michigan led, 61-45, at the last media timeout.
Simpson continued to add to his stat line as he grabbed a rebound with 2:40 remaining and etched his name in the Michigan record book with the triple-double.
The Wolverines will be back in action Friday night (Feb. 1) when they travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to face off against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. CST, and the game will be broadcast on FS1.
