CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team used two goals apiece for Raleigh Loughman and Danielle Wolfe to earn its 10th win of the season with a 4-1 road victory over Illinois on Friday night (Oct. 11) at Demirjian Park.
The Wolverines (10-3-1, 5-1-1 Big Ten) earned their 10th win of the season, which marked the first time since 2016 that U-M has earned double-digit wins in a season. Michigan's multi-goal match also was the ninth of the season and the second time in as many games that they have scored two goals or more.
Sophomore Loughman notched a career night as she scored two goals and added an assist for five points, while Wolfe scored two of her own for a career best. Junior Sarah Stratigakis added an assist on the first goal to tie her season-best 17 points (2018) and Sura Yekka got her third point of the season with an assist.
Junior goalkeeper Hillary Beall earned her 10th win in goal with four saves and one goal allowed.
Michigan attacked hard in the first 15 minutes of the contest, taking three shots with one on net. The early pressure paid off when Stratigakis used some fancy footwork on her defender and fed a pass to Loughman striking from the right.
Jaelyn Cunningham dove to her right as the pass came in and Loughman struck the ball into the bottom-right corner of the net to put Michigan up, 1-0, in the 25th minute.
The Fighting Illini (7-6-0, 1-5-0 Big Ten) appeared to score the equalizer minutes later but a late offsides whistle took the goal away. Beall made a clutch save in the closing minutes of the first half as U-M took a one-goal advantage into halftime.
Beall came up big for the second time in the match when she got her fingertips on a header off a corner kick in the 55th minute.
Michigan responded with a scoring chance when a ball bounced off a defender and Loughman chased it down on the right flank. Loughman sent in a well-placed cross to the head of Wolfe, who buried it in the right corner of the net and extended Michigan's lead to 2-0 in the 65th minute.
Michigan kept up the offensive pressure as Loughman stroked a ball bar-down into the net after it bounced off an Illinois defender and pushed the Wolverine lead to 3-0. Illinois responded off the kick to score and cut its deficit to 3-1 in the 85th minute.
The Wolverines added one last goal when Wolfe rushed down the field with a defender on her back and ripped the ball into the bottom of the net to give Michigan a 4-1 lead in the 88th minute.
The Wolverines will conclude their Illinois-state road trip when they travel to Evanston for a Sunday afternoon (Oct. 13) contest against Northwestern at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. CDT and will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
