Wolverines, Buckeyes Trade Race-Day Wins at Belleville Lake

BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan rowing program put together a solid day of racing against Ohio State on Saturday (Oct. 12), marking the varsity's final Midwest race of the fall season. The Big Ten showdown was held on the waters of Lake Belleville in windy conditions. Temperatures hovered near 50 degrees for the late-morning start.
Racing in pairs and fours, the teams raced two pieces in head-to-head format, sending boats off at a staggered pace, leading to a tense and competitive atmosphere on the water.
The Wolverines and Buckeyes traded wins all morning into the early afternoon. Michigan had the fastest pair (15:11.5) and fastest four (14:46.0) in the first piece, while the Buckeyes claimed the fastest time in both races (14:07.80; 13:47.3) in the second piece. Both programs raced nine sets of pairs and four quads each.
Head coach Mark Rothstein was glad to see his team back on the water in a competitive atmosphere.
"It was good for our team to race with a very competitive Ohio State program this weekend," he said.
"Our varsity is looking to finish strong next weekend at Head of the Charles, and then we will get to work on having a productive winter training trip."
Saturday's race marked the start of the downswing in the fall season. Two Michigan eight boats will take the water at the Head of the Charles next Sunday (Oct. 20) in Boston, and a novice event will close out the remainder of the fall slate the following Saturday (Oct. 27) in Bellville.
