BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Michigan rowing program was represented by a ninth-place finish from its first varsity eight boat Sunday (Oct. 20) at the Head of the Charles regatta on the Charles River. U-M finished seventh among all collegiate programs and marked the ninth time in the last 10 trips that the program has had at least one boat in the top 11 overall.
The U.S. national team eight won the race in 15:05.842 with program alum and volunteer assistant coach Felice Mueller stroking the other USNT boat in 15:06.833. Stanford was the top collegiate boat, 16.487 seconds behind the top American boats.
During a weekend filled with fast times and exciting events, the Women's Championship Eights race was among the best. The banks of the scenic Charles River were teeming with excitement for this race which featured nearly 20 of the top collegiate boats and about a half-dozen club or international boats.
"We get a little bit isolated during the fall, especially racing ourselves," said head coach Mark Rothstein, "so it's fun to come out to this part of the country and compete at a special event like this that includes many of the top teams in the country. We see it as a good opportunity to get out and test our speed."
U-M's 1V8 was coxed by senior Charlotte Powers and stroked by Grace Collins. Around the midpoint of the race, U-M's top boat was among the top half-dozen collegiate boats, mixing in with Princeton, Brown, Virginia, and others.
U-M rowed hard and navigated the turns of the Charles smoothly, but did not see the finish it wanted to in the standings. The Wolverines finished in 15:48.22, 1.224 behind Radcliffe for ninth overall. Michigan's second eight boat timed 16:14.617, stroked by Kate Burns and coxed by Erika Yasuda. That finish was good for 21st overall, and 16th among collegiate programs.
"I don't know that we had our best rows, but it was good to race fast crews and see where we stack up," said Rothstein. "As is the case every year, everyone is going to get a lot faster and we certainly need to."
The 1V8 finished ahead of all three other Big Ten entries (Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota) and the with the 2V8 also finished ahead of the Golden Gophers.
Michigan's varsity team tied a bow on its fall season, and now will prepare for off-water work and the team's annual winter training trip. The novice program will compete next Sunday (Oct. 27) in East Lansing, Michigan, for the final event of the 2019 calendar year.
