The University of Michigan ice hockey team (0-1-1) returns to Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena this weekend when the Wolverines host Lake Superior State (2-2-0) in a pair of games on Friday (Oct. 18) and Saturday (Oct. 19). Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
The Series
Michigan and Lake Superior State will face off for the 120th and 121st times. The Wolverines hold a 63-49-7 lead in the all-time series with the Lakers, which began on Dec. 28, 1973. Michigan defeated the Lakers, 6-3, in that contest played in Flint, Michigan.
Scouting the Lakers
Lake Superior State comes to Ann Arbor looking to build off a solid 2018-19 campaign under the guidance of former Mel Pearson assistant coach, Damon Whitten. In addition to finishing the regular season with a record of 23-13-2, the Lakers defeated Michigan State and Michigan Tech to win the 54th Great Lakes Invitational.
This season, the Lakers are 2-2-0 after suffering a home sweep last weekend at the hands of No. 2-ranked Denver. LSSU fell to the Pioneers, 3-1, on Friday night (Oct. 11) and 4-3 on Saturday (Oct. 12). Their two wins came a week prior when they swept Merrimack College. Before the season began, the Lakers were picked to finish sixth in the WCHA this year in the media and coaches polls.
Leading Lake Superior State
LSSU is led in points (five) by the trio of sophomore Ashton Calder (two goals, three assists), junior Hampus Eriksson (1G, 4A) and senior Max Humitz (3G, 2A). Junior goaltender Mareks Mitens has played all four games in net for the Lakers and has allowed 12 goals with 103 saves for a 3.00 goals-against average and .896 save percentage.
