KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team could not overcome a fast start by the 18th-ranked Western Michigan Broncos in a 4-1 loss Saturday night (Oct. 26) at Lawson Arena.
Western Michigan blitzed Michigan early, turning the tables on a Wolverines team that had started so well during Friday's 4-0 shutout at home. The Broncos scored twice in the first three minutes of the game on a pair of deflected shots, including the first of Paul Washe's two goals in the game.
Michigan answered on a power play early in the second period as Will Lockwood took a pass from Emil Öhrwall and rifled a shot from just inside the left faceoff circle to the back of the net just 1:26 into the stanza. Cam York earned a second assist on the play.
WMU answered right back, however, with a power-play goal of its own at the 15-minute mark of the period. The score stayed there into the second intermission as WMU goalie Brandon Bussi made a spectacular save on a power-play slapshot off the stick of York with two seconds remaining in the period.
Neither team got anything going in the third period, but WMU added an insurance goal with eight seconds remaining during a scramble in front of the cage with Washe logging the final point of the night.
Strauss Mann stopped 31 saves in defeat, while Lockwood finished his weekend with a pair of goals as Michigan settled for a series split with a loss in its first road game of the season.
Michigan will return to action Friday (Nov. 1) with the start of a Big Ten Conference road series at Ohio State.
