Michigan to Open Big Ten Schedule at No. 13 Ohio State

The University of Michigan ice hockey team (3-2-1, 0-0-0 Big Ten) opens the 2019-20 Big ten Conference season in Columbus with a weekend series at No. 13-ranked Ohio State (4-1-1, 0-00 Big Ten). The teams will play Friday (Nov. 1) at 7 p.m. and Saturday (Nov. 2) at 5 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
The Ohio State Series
Michigan and Ohio State meet for the 142nd time in program history, with U-M holding a 83-44-14 record in the all-time series with the Buckeyes. The teams first met in February 1964, when Michigan easily defeated the Buckeyes, 21-0, in Columbus. The Wolverines are 37-23-6 record on the road in the series.
U-M took last year's series with a 2-1-1 record, splitting the first two games in Columbus and earning a win and a tie at Yost Ice Arena later in the season. The Buckeyes collected the Big Ten point in the tie with a goal in the second overtime.
Last season, then-freshman forward Nolan Moyle scored three goals in two games against the Buckeyes at Yost Ice Arena. His scoring binge began with two third-period goals to lead the Wolverines a 4-2 win on Feb. 22. Moyle scored the game-tying goal midway through the third period against OSU the next night (Feb. 23).
Scouting the Buckeyes
Ohio State enters the weekend series ranked 13th in the latest edition (Oct. 28) of the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) poll. The Buckeyes scored four goals over the final five minutes of the second period Friday (Oct. 25) en route to a 7-2 win over Mercyhurst. On Saturday (Oct. 26), OSU notched a 3-1 victory over the Lakers
Ohio State This Season
Friday at Mercyhurst, Buckeye defenseman Wyatt Ege scored a hat trick, opening the scoring late in the second (15:30), adding a second goal with just three second left in the period and tallying 3:37 into the third period. The goals all came in a span of 8:07, two of which came on the power play to help the Buckeyes go 4-for-7 with the man-advantage an route to a 7-2 victory.
Redshirt freshman Kamil Sadlocha notched his first collegiate goal and point Saturday at Mercyhurst, with an assist from freshman Layton Ahac. Rookie Tate Singleton had two assists Friday for his first career two-point night.
Last Weekend
The Wolverines split their series with No. 18-ranked Western Michigan. U-M shut out the Broncos, 4-0, on Friday (Oct. 25) in Ann Arbor behind 36 saves from Strauss Mann. He has two shutouts on the season, tied for tops in the nation.
On Saturday (Oct. 26) in Kalamazoo, the Broncos turned the tables on Michigan with two goals in the first three minutes of the opening perioed en route to a 4-1 victory. Will Lockwood led the Wolverines with a goal in each game of the series.
A Weekend of Firsts
Freshmen Eric Ciccolini (three assists), Johnny Beecher (three assists) and Keaton Pehrson (assist) registered their first collegiate points in the season-opening weekend against Lake Superior State while graduate students Shane Switzer and Jacob Hayhurst played their first games as Wolverines and each collected an assist.
Strauss' Haus
Sophomore goalie Strauss Mann recorded his second consecutive Friday shutout with a 4-0 victory over No. 18-ranked WMU on Oct. 25 -- a game in which he recorded a career-high 36 saves. His earned his first career shutout win in a 4-0, 24-save effort against Lake Superior State on Oct. 18.
Wolverine Bites
• Jacob Hayhurst, Johnny Beecher and Nick Pastujov each won nine faceoffs in Michigan's 4-0 win over Lake Superior State on Oct. 18. The trio combined for 34 faceoff wins against LSSU on Oct. 19 (Beecher 16, Hayhurst 9, Pastujov 9).
• Michael Pastujov logged a career-best two assists against the Lakers on Oct. 19.
• Michigan earned its 600th all-time victory at Yost Ice Arena versus Lake Superior State on Oct. 18.
