COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team played No. 8 Indiana to a scoreless draw in the Big Ten Tournament final, but fell, 4-3, in the penalty-kick shootout on Sunday (Nov. 17) at Ludwig Field.
The Wolverines held Indiana to just four shots in 110 minutes, securing its 10th shutout for a new program record. Following the match, senior Jack Hallahan was named Offensive Player of the Tournament and made the All-Tournament Team along with senior Abdou Samake.
The Wolverines had the first chance of the match in the seventh minute when junior Mohammed Zakyi freed up graduate student Nebojsa Popovic on the counter, but his left-footed attempt hit the side netting.
Indiana had the two best chances in the first 45 minutes, but freshman goalkeeper Owen Finnerty was up to the task both times. In the 14th minute, Indiana's Victor Bezerra unleashed a right-footed volley from outside the box on the near side, but Finnerty got down and deflected it out for a corner. In the 23rd minute, Joshua Penn cut inside the 18-yard box and fired a shot through traffic, but Finnerty read it well, bodying the ball down and allowing junior Marc Ybarra to clear it away from danger.
Michigan had a short spurt at the end of the first half that concluded with a chance at the far post for sophomore Derick Broche, but he pushed his header wide of the frame. The teams were scoreless at halftime.
The Hoosiers began the second half with two free kicks in the offensive third, but neither one caused Finnerty any issues. The Wolverines were the aggressors in the second half, outshooting the Hoosiers, 6-0.
Michigan's best chance came in the 53rd minute when junior Joel Harrison intercepted an Indiana pass out of the back. He played it to Broche, who was in on Celetano, but fired his shot high of the frame. Ybarra had a shot in the 66th minute well outside the box, but his well-struck attempt was hit right to Celetano.
The match remained scoreless after 90 minutes, sending it to overtime and each team had one chance. In the 95th minute, a failed Indiana clearance fell to Hallahan, but his follow-up shot was scooped by Celetano. The Hoosiers had a chance to win in the 110th minute, but junior Umar Farouk Osman put his body in front of the shot, sending the match to penalty kicks.
In the shootout, IU had a chance to win in the fourth round, but Finnerty denied Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Jack Maher, who scored the overtime winner from the spot in Friday's (Nov. 15) semifinal. Ybarra made his attempt to keep the Wolverines alive, but IU's Joshua Penn got just enough on one to slip it past Finnerty to win it for the Hoosiers.
Michigan will hope to hear its name called on the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, which will be streamed live on NCAA.com Monday (Nov. 18) at 1 p.m. First-round matches take place on Thursday (Nov. 21) at campus sites.
