DURHAM, N.H. -- Freshman Johnny Beecher collected his first career multiple-goal game as the University of Michigan hockey team got back on track with a 4-1 win at New Hampshire on Friday night (Nov. 22) at Whittemore Center.
The Boston Bruins' first-round draft pick scored the team's first and final goals. His first got the proverbial monkey off the Wolverines' back as the squad converted on its first power-play opportunity of the game. The goal snapped a skid that had reached 19 attempts.
Michigan's penalty kill also was superb, going a perfect 4-for-4 against a New Hampshire power play that entered the weekend ranked seventh in the nation.
The Wildcats snuck in on the scoreboard early as Chase Stevenson fired through traffic from the right point to gove New Hapshire a 1-0 lead at 6:21 of the first period.
Michigan remained poised and evened the game six minutes later with Beecher's power-play goal. Senior Will Lockwood, playing in his first game since Nov. 1, earned the primary assist with graduate student Jacob Hayhurst picking up his first of two helpers on the night, his first multiple-point game as a Wolverine.
Rookie Cam York gave Michigan the lead at 18:02 of the first with a wrap-around goal, his second wrap-around tally of the season, banking the puck off netminder Mike Robinson. Hayhurst and freshman Keaton Pehrson assisted on the goal as the Wolverines took a 2-1 edge in the first intermission.
Freshman Jack Becker tallied his fourth goal of the season at 7:41 of the second period when he was sprung from the penalty box just in time to collect a Nick Pastujov pass and skate in one-on-one, beating Robinson on the short side.
UNH pulled Robinson with 1:04 remaining in the third period, but Beecher found the back of the net, stripping the Wildcats in their offensive zone and whipping it into the empty net at 18:36.
Sophomore Strauss Mann made a number of key saves, and finished the game with 23, as Michigan outshot UNH, 29-24.
The Wolverines will seek a sweep of New Hampshire when the Wolverines and Wildcats square off Saturday night (Nov. 23). Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on CBS All Access.
