DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team took New Hampshire to overtime, but a Wildcats goal 36 seconds into the extra session sent the Wolverines to a 3-2 setback on Saturday night (Nov. 23) at Whittemore Center.
Angus Crookshanks's second goal of the night decided the game early in the extra session capitalizing on a turnover in the corner and getting loose out front for the game-ending score.
It was a night of firsts that saw the first goals of the season for senior Jake Slaker and junior Michael Pastujov as well as the first start for senior goalie Hayden Lavigne of the 2019-20 campaign.
Pastujov scored as Michigan converted on its first power-play opportunity of the game. A wrister by Jimmy Lambert from the left point looked as though it had gone in and out, but without a whistle the team played on with Pastujov collecting the puck in the slot and slipping it back to Jack Summers along the blue line. Summers played catch with Pastujov sending it back to him on the right wall before he walked in and fired five-hole on Mike Robinson, and the Wolverines took a 1-0 lead at 11:35 of the first period.
Crookshank evened things up at 1 early in the second period as he took advantage of a giveaway in the Michigan zone for the unassisted marker at the 1:05 mark.
Slaker, who missed three games due to injury, scored his first goal of the season. As the Wolverines pushed the puck along the right wall, Garrett Van Wyhe backhanded a pass into the slot and Slaker went forehand to backhand and buried it behind Robinson to give Michigan a 2-1 lead at 13:30.
UNH knotted the game again at 2 less than three minutes later with a power-play tally by Max Gildon.
Lavigne made 24 saves in just over 60 minutes. He earned the nod after his stellar play last Saturday, coming in on relief against Michigan State and not allowing a goal. On the other end, Robinson finished the game with 22 stops.
Michigan was 1-for-3 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
The Wolverines will return to Big Ten action next Saturday (Nov. 30) when it opens a two-game series against Wisconsin in Madison. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. CST, and the game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
