The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament and will take on No. 2-ranked and No. 1-seed North Carolina on Sunday (Nov. 24) at 1 p.m. at Dorrance Field.
Sweet 16 Bound
• After earning a 3-2 victory over No. 15-ranked and No. 4-seed Texas Tech in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the Wolverines advance to the third round for the first time since 2013.
• Michigan is 2-1-1 in the NCAA third round and 0-1-1 in away games in the third round of the tournament, having fallen to Connecticut, 5-0, in 2003 and tying Penn State, with the Nittany Lions advancing in the shootout, 3-2, in 2012.
• This season, the Wolverines made their 14th NCAA Tournament appearance and their first since 2016.
• Michigan received an at-large bid to the tournament after posting three wins over nationally-ranked opponents and making its first trip to the Big Ten Tournament final since 2005. With its win over No. 15 Texas Tech, the Wolverines have defeated four ranked opponents in 2019.
• The Maize and Blue is joined by two other Big Ten schools in the field of 16: Big Ten champion Wisconsin and Big Ten Tournament winner Penn State.
Michigan Against No. 2-Ranked Teams
• The Wolverines have faced the No. 2-ranked team four times in the history of the program and hold a 1-2-1 overall record.
• Michigan has faced Notre Dame all four times in which it has played the No. 2 team in the nation.
• The Wolverines are 40-67-20 all-time against ranked opponents, having won four matches this season when taking on a nationally-ranked team.
Series History with North Carolina
• Michigan and North Carolina will meet for the first time in the history of the two programs.
Glancing at the Tar Heels
• North Carolina earned its regional No. 1 seed thanks to its 21-1-0 overall record; its lone loss came against Arkansas on Sept. 15.
• UNC is one of the most prolific programs in women's soccer having won 21 national championships under the tutelage of head coach Anson Dorrance.
• The Tar Heels rank sixth nationally with 60 goals and third nationally having allowed only eight goals in 23 matches.
• UNC has had 18 shutouts this season with its keepers being tested only 47 times.
• Alessia Russo and Brianna Pinto lead the Tar Heel offense with 25 points this season, while seven players have contributed double-digit points.
• Russo and Pinto each have added double-digit goals this season with 12 and 10, respectively.
• In goal, Claudia Dickey and Marz Josephson have split time in net with Dickey playing in 22 matches and Josephson seeing time in 17.
• Dickey has 0.21 goals-against average, giving up just three goals and making 28 saves and earning 13 shutouts.
One Win Away
• This season, Michigan has produced one of its best seasons in recent history securing its first double-digit win campaign since 2016.
• The Wolverines need just one more win in 2019 to tie a program-best 18 wins set by the 1997 and 2013 squads.
• U-M has had 16 seasons with 10 wins or more.
• Furthermore, the Wolverines have only had three seasons in which it has earned 17 wins or more -- 1997, 1999 and 2013.
Wolfe Clutch in NCAA Tournament
• Freshman Danielle Wolfe has been a spark plug off the bench for the Wolverines in the NCAA Tournament, scoring three goals in two games, including the game-winner against No. 15 Texas Tech.
• Wolfe's three goals tie for a Michigan tournament best as three other Wolverines have tallied three goals in an NCAA Tournament with the last being Meghan Toohey in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
• The freshman forward's two goals against Texas Tech also tie for a most for a Wolverine in a single NCAA Tournament game as it has happened four times; the last was Nkem Ezurike against Milwaukee in 2013.
• Wolfe needs just two more goals in NCAA matches to tie Ezurike with five goals.
• If Wolfe can tally three more points in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, she will tie Toohey for the most points by a Wolverine in a single NCAA Tournament.
When Stratigakis Earns a Point
• It is no secret that Big Ten Midfielder of the Year Sarah Stratigakis is a huge part of the Michigan offense and has made an impact on the Wolverines record thus far.
• Michigan is 13-0-0 when Stratigakis tallies at least one point in a contest and is 4-5-1 when Stratigakis does not contribute a point.
• Stratigakis leads the Michigan offense with 26 points (seven goals, 12 assists). Her 12 assists tie for ninth nationally and lead the Big Ten.
Three Players With 20-Point Seasons
• Head coach Jennifer Klein has turned the Wolverines into an attacking team in her two years at Michigan and has spread the offensive threat amongst all of its offensive players.
• Michigan has nearly doubled its goal total from the 2018 season, scoring 46 goals in 23 games in 2019 after scoring 28 goals in 18 games in 2018.
• Junior Sarah Stratigakis and sophomores Meredith Haakenson and Raleigh Loughman have contributed 20 points or more this season.
• Stratigakis leads the team with 26 points, while Haakenson and Loughman both have 20 points this season.
• Loughman and Haakenson have stepped up offensively in their second seasons as Wolverines as Loughman tallied four points as a freshman and Haakenson had two.
• Five players have earned 15 points or more this year with Nicki Hernandez adding 16 (five goals, six assists) and Danielle Wolfe contributing 15 (seven goals, one assist).
• In all, 16 players have had at least one point this season, while eight have had five points or more.
