ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team battled back after dropping the doubles point for a 6-1 victory over Central Florida on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 10) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan won the first doubles match with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 by the team of sophomore Mattias Siimar and freshman Andrew Fenty. However, the Knights rattled off consecutive wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to claim the doubles point heading into singles play.
Michigan evened the score at 1 when Siimar made quick work at the top singles spot. The Estonia native earned an upset win over No. 17-ranked Gabriel Decamps, defeating him in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
The freshmen in the lineup continued to play well in the early going, finishing nearly simultaneously to give U-M its first lead of the afternoon. Patrick Maloney earned his third straight win with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 5, while classmate Fenty also claimed his third win in a row with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 3.
Junior Connor Johnston battled back from a second-set defeat for a convincing 6-2 win in the third set to give U-M the come-from-behind win.
The remaining matches were played out, with senior Myles Schalet battling back from a first-set loss to No. 122-ranked Alan Rubio to win 6-4 in the second set and 12-10 in the third-set tiebreaker. Fellow senior Gabe Tishman also came back from a first-set loss to win, 6-4, 7-6 (2) in his remaining two sets for a 6-1 Michigan victory.
Michigan will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 23, at noon when it hosts Notre Dame in a rematch of last year's NCAA Regional final. U-M defeated the Fighting Irish, 4-0, to advance to the NCAA Round of 16 at the VTC.
