NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The University of Michigan men's cross country team garnered U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I All-Academic team honors for the fifth time in as many years under head coach Kevin Sullivan, while sophomore Isaac Harding was also recognized with an individual All-Academic honor, the association announced on Thursday (Feb. 14).
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at its respective NCAA regional championship. The Wolverines met that standard for the seventh time in the last eight seasons, combining for a team GPA of 3.15.
Harding, a redshirt sophomore studying movement science, was one of the top contributors for the young Michigan men's squad that ultimately finished 19th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
He ultimately finished 175th at the national meet to cross the line as Michigan's fifth scorer. A week prior, he ran his best race of the season in an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional to help his team qualify for nationals with a third-place showing. His effort was good for All-Region honors.
Harding turned in one of the best seasons in Michigan cross country history. In addition to an All-America 20th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, he claimed the Great Lakes Region individual title and earned Big Ten Athlete of the Year honors.
To qualify for the All-Academic award, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region's top 25 (or top 10 percent) in 2016.
Harding was among 111 male student-athletes from institutions across the country who earned the award.
