PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored in all but one inning as the Wolverines opened the 2019 season with a 10-0 victory over Binghamton on Friday (Feb. 15) at First Data Field.
Michigan pounded out 11 hits, led by senior Jimmy Kerr's three hits, and rode an impressive combined shutout from lefty ace junior Tommy Henry and freshman Isaiah Paige.
In six innings of work, Henry tied a career high with nine strikeouts against six hits and one walk to earn the win. Page allowed one hit in a three-inning save in his collegiate debut.
Michigan wasted no time in grabbing a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Ako Thomas singled to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a walk to sophomore Jesse Franklin, the next two Wolverines were retired before Kerr sent a crisp single down the right-field line to bring home Thomas and Franklin.
Michigan added a run on a groundout in the second inning for a 3-0 lead.
Henry worked out of a couple of jams in his opening-day outing. In the first inning, Binghamton worked runners to second and third, but Henry got all three outs via strikeout. In the third inning, Binghamton loaded the bases with two outs only to see Thomas and Henry partner on a nifty 3-4-1 putout at first base to end the inning.
Michigan extended its lead to 6-0 through four innings as the offense got on track. Junior Jordan Brewer singled to lead off the inning and stole second, followed by a walk to Blake Nelson. Brewer took third on a double-play grounder from Blomgren, then Thomas singled to score Brewer. Thomas advanced to third base on a Franklin single. Franklin swiped second, then he and Thomas scored on sophomore Jordan Nwogu's triple off the base of the center-field wall.
Brewer's sacrifice fly in the fifth extended the lead to 7-0 as he plated Kerr, who led off the frame with a ringing double off the left-field wall. An unearned run in the sixth gave U-M an 8-0 lead and Blomgren delivered an RBI single through the right side to make it 9-0 in the eighth.
Kerr put an exclamation point on the victory when he crushed a solo home run off the batter's eye in center field, more than 410 feet away. Kerr finished his day 3-for-5 while Thomas, Nwogu and Brewer had two hits apiece.
The Wolverines and Bearcats will continue their three-game series on Saturday (Feb. 16). First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at First Data Field in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
