JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse pulled out a gritty road win against the Jacksonville Dolphins by an 11-10 scoreline in the Moe's Southwest Lacrosse Classic Saturday (Feb. 23) at DB Milne Field.
U-M never trailed in the contest that featured four ties. Michigan (2-1) led 2-1 after the first quarter of action with scores coming from freshman Bryce Clay at 5:18 and a marker from junior Jason Brown at the 3:59 mark of the second.
Brown's second at 3:59 and senior Brent Noseworthy's first of the day at 7:57, both assisted by Myers, stretched the advantage to 4-1. JU then outscored U-M, 2-1, for the remainder of the quarter as the tally at the end of the first half sat at 5-3.
At the half, the Maize & Blue held a 20-11 lead in the shot category, while sophomore face-off specialist Connor Cronin won eight-of-nine draws. The U-M defense was also tenacious, causing nine Dolphin turnovers.
After the two teams played even at 4-4 in the third with U-M utilizing four different goal scorers, Michigan held a 9-7 lead entering the final stanza.
The Dolphins (0-4) scored two straight to tie the contest at 9-9 with 9:05 to play in the contest. The U-M defense then held strong on multiple JU possessions and curtailed the Dolphin momentum. At 5:55 of the fourth, senior Justin Gibbons buried his first goal of the season and first since 2016 on a feed from X by Clay for his third point of the afternoon.
JU tied the contest yet again 54 seconds later, on an Evan Tyler goal, but Michigan took the lead for good with the eventual game-winning goal from the crosse of Noseworthy for his third of the day on a feed from the wing by Clay.
The final sequence of the game came with 11.8 seconds on the clock, as Jacksonville called timeout and restarted play on the wing. After an Evan Tyler dodge, Heidt made his 15th and final save of the contest, thwarting the Dolphin effort to tie it late.
Clay (2g, 2a.), Myers (1g., 3a.) and Noseworthy (3g., 1a.) had four points each, while senior Michael Borda had a game-high four caused turnovers.
U-M's man-down unit held JU in check (0-of-4), and has now allowed only two goals in 10 man-down scenarios this year.
