
Michigan's B1G Tournament Run Ends with Semifinal Loss to Johns Hopkins

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team battled back to tie the game on two occasions, including erasing a five-goal deficit, but was unable to pull off the upset as it fell to 14-12 to No. 1 seed Johns Hopkins on Thursday (April 30) in a Big Ten Tournament semifinal at SHI Stadium.
The Wolverines (6-9) tied the game on two occasions, including scoring four straight over a 17-minute span to knot the score at 12-12 in the fourth quarter. Junior Nick Roode led Michigan with three goals and an assist, while Luke Shannehan had two goals and an assist for three points, and Alex Lobel notched three points with a goal and two assists. Graduate student Jake Waldman scored his first Michigan goal, while Hunter Taylor scored a goalie goal -- the first in Big Ten Tournament history.
Defensively, Rowan Clay had two caused turnovers and two ground balls and Will Tominovich had two ground balls. In the cage, Taylor made eight saves.
Johns Hopkins (9-4) got out to a hot start with three goals to take the 3-0 lead with 9:09 left in the first quarter. Roode opened the Michigan scoring with a little over six minutes left in the opening quarter off a pass from Lobel. The Blue Jays added a fourth goal on their next possession; however, the Wolverines continued to battle as Roode assisted on a Bo Lockwood goal and Adam Udell scored as Michigan had numbers on the offensive side of the field to pull within one, 4-3, to close out the first stanza.
JHU built its lead back to two to start the second quarter before Shannehan picked a pass on the ride and finished on the offensive side. Two minutes later, Hopkins added to its tally to take a 6-4 advantage, but Michigan capitalized on an extra-man opportunity when Waldman scored his first goal of the season on a rip from deep with 11:15 remaining in the half. The game continued to go back and forth as the Blue Jays added their seventh of the game with 10 minutes left in the half.
Taylor recorded his first career goal, going coast to coast with 6:37 left in the half, and Shannehan tied it up with just under four minutes remaining in the half. Johns Hopkins added a final goal and went into the locker room leading 8-7.
The Blue Jays started the third quarter by scoring four straight goals to extend their lead to 12-7. Michigan continued to battle, with Roode picking up the rebound off a Udell shot and Alex Gatto followed it up with a take of his own to bring U-M within three with 15 minutes to play.
The Wolverine scoring continued into the fourth quarter. Kade Goldberg picked up a rebound and buried a shot before Roode recorded his hat trick off a one-timer feed from Lobel. Michigan knotted the score at 12-12 on its next possession, with Lobel scoring one of his own off a pass from Goldberg.
Johns Hopkins scored on the ensuing faceoff with just under eight minutes to play and scored one final security goal in the closing seven minutes to lock up the win.
