PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's track and field team closed out its weekend at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday (March 30) with several top-10 and career-best performances.
Sprinters Desmond Nicholas and Joe McCarthy were in career-best form at 200 meters as both men posted top-10 finishes to headline a limited schedule for the Michigan men after a busy Friday session.
Nicholas was just .01 seconds shy of his career best as he clocked 21.63 (+0.2m/s) for ninth place in the event, while teammate McCarthy topped his personal record by nearly a tenth of a second for 10th in 21.65 (+0.0m/s).
In the only other individual event on the track for the Wolverines, Matt Plowman and Derrick Simmons were 18th and 19th in 1:51.65 and a career-best 1:51.84, respectively.
The new PRs for Nicholas and Simmons were the 11th and 12th for the Wolverines on the weekend.
Michigan picked up a pair of top-10 finishes in invitational sections of the field events as Manning Plater was sixth in the hammer throw and Daniel Butael was eighth in the triple jump.
The Wolverines closed out the weekend with a fifth-place finish in the 4x400 relay in 3:12.49.
Only multi-event athlete Jack Lint will be in action next weekend at the Arizona Jim Click Shootout on Thursday and Friday (April 4-5) as he contests his first decathlon in a Michigan uniform.
The full team will be back in action the following weekend (April 12-13) as the squad splits between the Louisville Invitational and the UC San Diego Triton Invitational.
